Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Millions of years ago, early man used a variety of simple weapons to hunt for food and to use as protection. Clubs and stone blades were used in those earliest days. Fire was used to forge wood and stone into sharp points to develop what primitive but deadly weapon?

Answer: Spear

The simple spear was the first serious weapon and originated five hundred thousand years ago. Fire was the key to developing sharper blades, whether it was forged out of wood or stone.
2. This simple leather and cloth strap was an early attempt at ranged warfare. The idea was to use the weapon to lengthen a person's arm and generate more power by use of centrifugal force. Which weapon was it?

Answer: Sling

In the Bible, David used a sling and a rock to bring down Goliath. There are two basic slinging techniques: over one's head, or an underhanded motion near the wrist. Whichever way one chose to use this weapon, the sling had to be swung hard enough to keep the straps tight. The range of a sling rock could exceed that of a bow's arrow. That's pretty amazing for such a simple weapon.
3. Ancient Romans excelled at close-range combat. One of the weapons used by Roman foot soldiers was this sword with two razor-sharp edges and tip. It could be used for thrusting or hacking. In Latin it's the word for sword. What is that word?

Answer: Gladius

The beauty of the gladius was that the soldier could draw the weapon by his right hand on the right side. That would eliminate the chance for an ally getting injured while drawing the weapon across the body. The Macedonians were defeated by the Romans using this weapon during the Battle of Pydna.
4. One of the last weapons used in India for mastering the art of kalaripayattu, a martial art, this weapon was actually two weapons in one: a straight razor-like blade combined with a bullwhip. By what name was it known?

Answer: Urumi

This strange weapon was favored by women because it relied on dexterity and finesse rather than size and strength. The urumi was perfect for fending off multiple attacks from enemies since its wide sweeping action covered the entire area surrounding the attacker.
5. Weaponry in warfare wasn't used entirely by men. There were the deadly lady ninjas. They specialized in use of poisons and shuriken, concealed swords. They also used a weapon attached to their fingers that acted like claws. The weapon was called what?

Answer: Neko-te

Translated, neko-te means "cat hands." Worn on the fingertips, the lady ninja could use this weapon (it looked like really long, sharp fingernails) to attack the eyes and crotch of the enemy as a last resort. Ouch!
6. A certain style of fencing was a tradition in Ireland up until the 19th century. A club or cudgel was used and later fashioned into a walking stick for travelers. What was it called?

Answer: Shillelagh

The humble shillelagh was used mostly to settle disputes in a gentlemanly way. If a gentleman wanted to fight dirty, he would fill the head of the stick with lead for a "loaded shillelagh". That usually did the trick.
7. This stealth weapon, often used by off-duty police officers in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries, looked innocent enough. In fact, it looked just like a simple cane or staff. It was actually quite deadly. What was the weapon of choice for off-duty police officers and even infantry?

Answer: Brandistock

What made the brandistock so deadly were the three sharp retractable blades that could be shaken out of the staff and locked in place with sharp wrist motion. It became quite a nasty weapon, especially in close combat.
8. This next weapon was one of the finest swords ever made. Used by Japanese warriors during the Sengoku period(mid-fifteenth to early seventeenth centuries)it was powerful enough to behead someone and still retain its edge. Name this mighty Japanese sword.

Answer: Katana

Sword blades were very well crafted. It took several artisans to forge the steel in just the right way. Steel with a high content of carbon kept its edge but broke more easily. Using small amounts of carbon meant that the blade was less likely to break but more likely to bend.

The katana used the harder steel for the edge of the blade and the softer steel for the core, resulting in the perfect weapon for slicing in one slick move.
9. Used mainly in the American frontier during the 19th century, this particular knife was named for the American pioneer and soldier who used it to save his life in a duel. What is this knife called?

Answer: Bowie knife

Arkansas blacksmith James Black created the Bowie knife with help from Jim Bowie himself. It evolved into a weapon with a broad 8-inch blade, approximately 1/4 inches thick, with a notch at the bottom of the blade and a clip point at the top of the blade which was designed for added control. The Bowie knife was also used effectively for killing and skinning game animals.
10. In the 1830s, a gunsmith named Henry Deringer invented his namesake, the der(r)inger pistol. In 1836 another man devised a firearm which was an improvement over the derringer, and which is regarded as being the first modern "revolver". Who is he?

Answer: Samuel Colt

The derringer was practical since it could fit into purse or pocket and usually hit its mark at close range. The problem with this firearm was that it was difficult to load, fired only one shot, and that one bullet moved very slowly. Colt's "revolver" could shoot five or six bullets without reloading, by means of a double-action mechanism where the gun barrel rotated by a single pull of the trigger. Remington, Smith & Wesson, and Winchester came along later.
