Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From what tank was the suspension of the T-28 medium copied from?

Answer: Vickers A1E1

The Soviet T-28 tank shared many similarities with the British Vickers A1E1, and it also influenced the design of the Soviet T-35 tank.
The T-28 was generally not considered a successful tank, and it performed poorly in the Winter War of 1939-40.
2. Which of the following Soviet tanks saw action during the Spanish Civil War?

Answer: T-26 Model 1933

Soviet commander Dmitry Pavlov commanded 50 BT-5s and 300 T-26s as volunteers fighting for the Republican side.
During the conflict, the BT-5 was shown to have superior performance in combat to the Panzer I, and the T-26 m. 1933s was also seen as superior to Italian and German tankettes.
3. The BT-7A was what type of tank?

Answer: Artillery support

The BT-7A was commonly referred to simply as "the artillery tank", and it was armed with a 76mm howitzer for close-range artillery support role. Its guns could also be used in closer skirmishes, and it proved more deadly than other variants of the early BT-7.
4. Due to the installation of a flamethrower on the turret, the main gun of the KV-8 was reduced from 76mm to how many millimeters?

Answer: 45mm

The KV-8 carried the 45mm (1.77in) M1932 gun, a near 30mmm downgrade from the KV-1A. Despite these, its 45mm gun was camouflaged to look like a 76mm (either a F32 or ZiS-5 gun).
5. What was the T-34 Model 1940 also known as?

Answer: T-34/76A

The Model 1940 version under designation 'T-34/76A' entered production even before the German invasion of the USSR, although in June 1941 their numbers were still insufficient to contribute to changing the rapid German advance.
6. What was the last Soviet tank design to enter production before the end of WW2?

Answer: IS-3

The IS-3's large main gun (125mm D-25T) gave it the nickname "Schuka", meaning "pike". Only 29 IS-3s were produced before WW2 ended. The T-44 was also among the last Soviet tanks to be produced, but by the end of the war 965 vehicles were already manufactured.
7. Western analysts designated the T-72M main battle tank as which of the following?

Answer: T-72G

The T-72M was a downgraded version of the original T-72 intended for export. It saw service with Poland and Czechoslovakia, with each country making further modifications to the existing tank.
8. What anti-tank missile did the T-62M main battle tank carry?

Answer: Sheksna

The 9K118 Sheksna was designed specifically for the later variants of the T-62 tank. It had the NATO reporting name "AT-12 Swinger". Despite its effectiveness, it was replaced with the superior "Arkan" ATGM, a variant of the 9M117 Bastion.
9. Where is the smoke-grenade launcher on the T-80BV located?

Answer: On two sides of the turret, behind ERA blocks

The original T-80 tank had its grenade launcher on the two sides of the main gun, but it did not feature Explosive Reactive Armor. The T-80BV featured ERA panels on the front and sides of the turret, and so to increase protection, the grenade launcher had to be moved back to the sides of the turret behind the lineup of ERA armor.
10. Many later variants of the T-80 tank were equipped with the 9M119M1 Invar ATGM. What type of missile guidance did the Invar missile have?

Answer: SALH

SALH stands for Semi-Active Laser Homing, a type of missile that by the late 1980s slowly outclassed older SACLOS missiles, or Semi-Active Command to Line of Sight.
