Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On the 4th of November, 1979, armed gunmen stormed the American Embassy in Tehran, Iran. How many Americans did they initally take hostage?

Answer: 66

13 were released within two weeks and one eight months later.
2. The proposed operation to free the hostages, Op Eagle Claw, was to be executed by which of America's Special Forces?

Answer: Delta Force

Unfortunately the Delta contingent failed to get past the first rendezvous.
3. 100 Rangers were also to be flown in. What was to be the job of the 100 Rangers?

Answer: Secure an airfield

They were to secure Manzariyeh Airfield in order to allow aircraft to land and ferry the hostages and Delta operatives back to America.
4. What was the third option to infiltrate Iran?

Answer: Take trucks through the Turkish border

This was dumped because of the expected amount of casualties. The final plan was to fly in the Delta members to RV 'Desert 1'. From there, the helicopters would be refueled and would fly to the outskirts of Tehran where the Delta operatives would meet-up with operatives already in the country.

After the embassy had been assaulted the Delta operatives were to RV with the helicopters and be flown to a nearby airbase. They would then be flown out of the country by aircraft.
5. How many helicopters were still able to continue when the contingent arrived at the RV 'Desert 1'?

Answer: 6

Of the original 8 only six made it to 'Desert 1', then one suffered a hydraulic failure and could not continue the mission. The Op could have continued with 6, but 5 was just not enough.
6. After the missions cancelation, a RH-53 helicopter flew into a parked C-130 causing an immediate explosion. How many were killed in this explosion?

Answer: 8

All killed were crew members from the USMC and USAF. The reason behind this accident is that the rotors of the helicopter were kicking up a lot of sand and the pilot couldnt see the parked C-130.
7. There were undercover American agents at the scene of the siege.

Answer: True

They were to give the Delta operatives a safe house for one day before the night of the operation.
8. After the failure of the original operation what was the codename of the proposed second rescue mission?

Answer: Honey Badger

"Honey Badger" was not needed, but if it was it too would have almost certainly have failed; after the first failure, the American hostages were moved all over Iran and it would have been impossible to assault every site simultaneously.
9. Had the mission been a complete success, what was the proposed fate of the 8 helicopters?

Answer: They were to be destroyed

Unfortunately, the helicopters were left behind. Intact with the entire mission details also still very intact. Because of this the Iranian's moved the Americans all over Iran.
10. How long did the siege last?

Answer: 444 days

That's a year and a third spent as a hostage.
