10. The USS Alligator was best known as the first United States Navy submarine. In which war was it launched?

Answer: Civil War

The USS Alligator was built by France and sold to the United States. Originally it had oars to propel it through the water, but these were replaced by a single screw, raising its top speed to about seven knots. It was lost on April 3rd, 1863, due to bad weather, with no loss of life.

The first American submarine of all was the Turtle, which was built at the time of the Revolutionary War, but it was never in the U.S. Navy proper.
