The last president to have been one of the "founding fathers" of the United States, James Monroe served as the fifth president of the United States from 1817 to 1825.
2. Organized the Louisiana Purchase

Although he is better known for his role in drafting the Declaration of Independence and his election as third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson organized the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, almost doubling the country's size.

William McKinley was the last president to have served in the Civil War, he led the nation to victory during the Spanish-American War, and in 1900, secured the passage of the Gold Standard Act. He served as the 25th president of the United States from March 4, 1897 until his assassination in September 1901, six months into his second term.
