Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The mountain on which the sculpture is built was named after Charles Rushmore. Who was he?

Answer: A lawyer from New York.

Charles Rushmore visited the area to check some mining titles for a local mining promoter in 1885. The mountain was jokingly named after him by his guide, when the latter was asked about the mountain's original name.
2. Who created the sculptures on Mount Rushmore?

Answer: Gutzon Borglum

Gutzon Borglum was born in 1867. He was also commissioned to carve a Confederate Memorial on Stone Mountain, Georgia, but he abandoned the project. He died in 1941.
3. Under which President of United States did the construction of the monument begin?

Answer: Calvin Coolidge

Coolidge said at the dedication of the project in 1927 that Rushmore was "American in its conception, magnitude and meaning". It was he who suggested that the face of Theodore Roosevelt be added to the monument.
4. Which of the four President's heads was carved first?

Answer: George Washington

The head of George Washington took the longest time to be completed, because the Great Depression increased financial constraints.
5. This President's head was the third to be built and was dedicated on the 150th anniversary of the United States Constitution. Who was he?

Answer: Lincoln

Lincoln's head was dedicated on September 17, 1937. The carving of his face had been difficult because of his beard, but was eventually completed.
6. Which of the following Presidents' heads had to removed from their original position due to technical difficulties?

Answer: Both Lincoln and Jefferson

The position of the Presidents from left to right is Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln. But in Borglum's original designs, Jefferson was to the left of Washington and an inscription in the shape of Louisiana Purchase was to be carved where Lincoln's head now stands. The changes had to be done because of weakness in granite at certain places.
7. The sculptor in charge of the construction died unexpectedly just before the carving was complete. His son oversaw the work from then on. What was the son's first name?

Answer: Lincoln

Gutzon Borglum died in March 1941. His son, Lincoln, spent the next seven months refining the monument. On October 31, 1941, construction was stopped.
8. Which of the following is *not* true about Mount Rushmore?

Answer: The monument was fully completed as per the initial plan.

Borglum's plans called for the carving of the Presidents up to their waists, but only the faces were carved. The monument has never been completed in in accordance with the initial plan.

It is true that no worker died during the construction, unusual for such a large project. About 1700 dollars were collected from schoolchildren during the Great Depression, due to a lack of funds.
9. The original plan had been to carve the Presidents to the waists, but only the faces were completed. What was the height of each face?

Answer: 60 feet

The height of each President's face was 60 feet (18 m), from chin to forehead. This made the faces as tall a six-floor building.
10. Mount Rushmore was dedicated twice. Once, by Calvin Coolidge in 1927. Who was the other President of the United States to have dedicated the monument?

Answer: George H.W. Bush

George H.W. Bush officially dedicated the monument in 1991, on the fiftieth anniversary of its completion.
