Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When John Wilkes Booth left Ford's theater, where did he and one of his fellow conspirators go?

Answer: Home of Mary Surrat

After fleeing Ford's theater, Booth met up with one of the three conspirators involved in Lincoln's assassination, David Herold. Booth and Herold traveled to Mary Surrat's boarding house where they collected the things that had been left there for their escape to Virginia.
2. Several hours after John Wilkes Booth killed Abraham Lincoln, he and David Herold found themselves at the home of Dr. Samuel Mudd. Had Booth ever met Doctor Mudd before?

Answer: Yes

Dr. Samuel Mudd, his wife, and four children lived on a 218 acre farm in Maryland. Doctor Mudd was a man of the Confederacy. Four months before the assassination, Doctor Mudd offered to help Booth in a kidnapping plot of the President, not an assassination.

When Booth arrived at Doctor Mudd farmhouse, the doctor put a splint on Booth's leg and let him and David Herold spend the night at his home.
3. After leaving Doctor Mudd's home, Booth and David got help from two men named Samuel Cox and Thomas Jones. What was the occupation of Thomas Jones?

Answer: Former Secret Service Agent

Doctor Mudd sent Booth and David Herold to meet Samuel Cox. When they got lost looking for his farm, an Indian named Oswell Swann led Booth and Herold to the home of Thomas Jones. Thomas was a Secret Service agent arrested for disloyalty. While in prison his wife died and he had to sell his farm. Thomas helped Doctor Mudd by hiding Booth and Herold until they could get out of Maryland.
4. Where did Booth and Herold want to flee to for safety?

Answer: Virginia

Booth and Herold spent eight days hiding out in a pine thicket waiting for Thomas Jones to help them get across the Potomac and into Machodoc Creek, Virginia. Booth thought if they got into Virginia that they would be free from the militia that followed them. They would find themselves going the wrong way on the river and would have to turn around.
5. On what day did Booth and Herold meet with the Quesenbury family in Virginia?

Answer: April 23

When Booth and Herold finally got turned around the right way on the river, they made it to Virginia. The day was Sunday, April 23rd. Booth and Herold arrived at the home of Elizabeth Quesenbury. Elizabeth was known to help the Confederates in the war effort. Once she understood who Booth was and what he had done, Elizabeth arranged for two men named Baden and Harbin to help Booth and Herold to get to Virginia.
6. Was there any time when Booth and Herold were turned away?

Answer: Yes

On the same day that they were helped by Elizabeth Quesenberry, Booth and Herold were turned away by Dr. Richard Stuart in King George County, Virginia. Doctor Stuart denied knowing Dr. Samuel Mudd and hindered Booth and Herold from staying with them overnight.

A note was later found addressed to Doctor Stuart admonishing him for not helping John Wilkes Booth. The note was written by John Wilkes Booth and used in Doctor Stuart's defense when he was interrogated for aiding and abetting Booth.
7. Booth and Herold ended up the shack of William Lucas and took refuge there. What was it about William Lucas that Booth despised?

Answer: He was black

Upon being thrown out of the home of the rich Stuart family, Booth and Herold ended up at the home of William Lucas, a farmer. William lived with his wife and son. Booth hated the fact that he had to rely on a black man for shelter and threatened to kill the man whenever possible. Finally, William let them stay and while Booth and Herold slept in his house, William and his wife stayed outside out of fear for what Booth might do to them if they slept.
8. The last stop Booth would ever make on his escape was to the Garret farmhouse in Virginia. What kind of farm was it?

Answer: Tobacco

Booth and Herold were sent to the Garret Farmhouse in Virginia where they enjoyed the family's hospitality, unlike that of William Lucas and Richard Stuart. Garrett offered both men a seat at his table and a bed to sleep in. On the night of the twenty-fifth, Booth and Herold were banished to the Garret barn where they slept until morning.
9. When the Sixteenth New York Calvary Unit set the Garret barn on fire, did Booth surrender?

Answer: No

Garret had begun to distrust Booth and Herold so he made them sleep in the barn. Early in the morning of the twenty-sixth, Booth and Herold were awakened by a Calvary Unit outside the barn. Trying to get the men to leave the barn, the Calvary Unit set it on fire. David Herold exited the barn, but Booth would not surrender. Knowing he wasn't going to surrender, a Calvary soldier named Thomas "Boston" Corbett got an idea.
10. How did the manhunt for John Wilkes Booth finally come to an end?

Answer: He was shot and killed

As the fire burned the barn, Sergeant Robert "Boston" Corbett went around to the side of the barn and shot Booth through a burned area of the barn. The bullet entered Booth's neck and severed the spinal cord at the fourth and fifth cervical vertebrae. Booth was paralyzed from the neck down.

His body was retrieved from the barn and laid on the porch of the Garret barn. His last words were "useless, useless". He was speaking of his hands which had been raised in front of him so he could see the hands that assassinated President Abraham Lincoln.

The manhunt for John Wilkes Booth ended on April 26, 1865, twelve days after President Lincoln was assassinated.
