Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At approximately what time on April 15, 1912, did Titanic sink?

Answer: 2:20 A.M.

The Titanic struck the iceberg at around 11:35 PM, and sank at approximately 2:20 A.M. Thus, the Titanic sank in less than 3 hours.
2. What color was the Titanic's hull below the waterline?

Answer: red

The Titanic's hull was red below the waterline and black above it.
3. In which manner did the Titanic sink?

Answer: Down by the bow with stern rising

The Titanic went down by the bow (Front) first because that was where the water was entering quickest. The watertight bulkheads were not sealed above deck E, so the water spilled back and back, just like putting water in an ice cube tray, until the weight of the water pulled the ship down, and caused the stern to rise.
4. Approximately how many people were on board the night the Titanic sank?

Answer: 2200

There were about 2200 people on board that fateful night. About 700 survived the wreck, while 1500 died.
5. How many screws (propellers) did the Titanic have?

Answer: 3

Three screws was by then standard for most large liners in the White Star Line.
6. For many years, there was much controversy surrounding WHICH thing that may have happened during the sinking of the Titanic?

Answer: The ship breaking apart before sinking

Many have argued that the ship broke apart the night of the sinking because of all the weight being forced on the weakest points of the ship, while some say that the ship went down in one piece. As for the other three, no evidence has been found to support any of them.
7. What was the name of Californian's wireless operator?

Answer: Cyril Evans

8. What item, intended to be used by the men in the crow's nest, could not be used because they didn't have a key to the storage locker?

Answer: Binoculars

It is believed that another sailor, David Blair, took the key with him when he left the ship, having been reassigned shortly before she set off on her maiden voyage. It has been suggested that, if available, the binoculars could have helped the lookout spot the iceberg earlier.
9. Which one of these is NOT true about the iceberg Titanic hit?

Answer: It was the only iceberg in the area

Definitely NOT the only one in the area. Many other ships during the day that had crossed the area Titanic would eventually sink in, reported that there was "much ice" and growlers, floes, and even icebergs. When Carpathia came to Titanic's rescue at a top speed of 22 knots, it was a wonder that the Carpathia didn't hit an iceberg herself.
10. Did the Titanic have an Orlop Deck?

Answer: Yes
