Answer: Andrew Johnson

Andrew Johnson (1865-1869) succeeded Abraham Lincoln as the 17th U.S. President. Not only was he a Democrat (even as President Lincoln was a Republican), this former vice president and president was from the state of Tennessee, a state that had seceded from the Union.

Answer: Jimmy Carter

As of 2012, Jimmy Carter enjoys the longest period of post-presidential life in history. He has been very busy with a post-president life that includes going to negotiate with North Korea in 1994, negotiating the Nairobi agreement in 1999, helping with the Geneva Accords in 2002, winning the Nobel prize in 2002, and many other activities around the world.

Answer: John Quincy Adams

It is true that John Quincy Adams (son of John Adams) did not win the electoral or popular vote in 1824, yet won the presidency. As part of the "Era of Good Feelings," there was technically only one political party (Democratic-Republican) but four candidates. Since no one candidate won an electoral majority, the election went to the House of Representatives which chose Adams as the next president.

It was in the negotiations that Adams was accused of making a "corrupt bargain" with Henry Clay (one of the four presidential candidates and Speaker of the House) by promising Henry Clay the job of Secretary of State.

The Secretary of State had been a good job by which to become president since four of the previous six presidents had once held that position.

The other two previous presidents who were not Secretary of State, Washington and John Adams, actually held the higher positions of President/Vice President.

Answer: Lyndon B. Johnson

Like Andrew Johnson, Lyndon B. Johnson would replace an assassinated president, John F. Kennedy. Lyndon B. Johnson would only serve one full term, choosing not to run for re-election. Both Johnsons were southerners (Tennessee and Texas).

James Monroe was the fifth U.S. President but served many roles before his presidency including Secretary of State, Secretary of War, governor of Virginia and U.S. Senator. His speech of 1823, later called the Monroe Doctrine, advocated that Europe should not further involve itself in the Americas.

Answer: Thomas Jefferson

Elected in the "Revolution of 1800," Thomas Jefferson served two terms as president. This founding father played a huge role in early American history, including the purchase of the Louisiana purchase. Recently he has been most associated with Sally Hemings, a slave, as father of some or all her children.

However, Jefferson viewed his importance differently. Jefferson wrote his own epitaph: HERE WAS BURIED THOMAS JEFFERSON, AUTHOR OF THE DECLARATION OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE OF THE STATUTE OF VIRGINIA FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM, AND FATHER OF THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA.

Andrew Jackson is a fascinating president who supported the idea of the independent man and democracy, yet owned slaves and was responsible for the mass removal of Native Americans from the East. Although not a founding father, Andrew Jackson (and Jacksonian Democracy) would have a major influence on U.S. history.

John F. Kennedy would be elected in 1960 and would be assassinated on November 22nd 1963. The youngest president was actually Theodore Roosevelt, but he was not elected (in his first term) but instead succeeded McKinley upon his assassination. Kennedy's short term is most associated with the Bay of Pigs, the Berlin Wall, and the Cuban Missile crisis. Domestically his presidency is probably most remembered for his tax cuts, his attempts to improve civil rights, and, of course, his support of sending a man to the moon.

Answer: James Madison

Another founding father and another Virginian, James Madison was the 4th U.S. President. He served in many positions including the House of Representative. There were many involved in the writing of the Constitution, but his role in introducing what would be the first 10 amendments to the Constitution was vital.

Answer: John Adams

John Adams had the tough task of following George Washington. As the last Federalist president, he had the tough task of keeping the country together even as the U.S. almost fought a war with France. Despite his split with Jefferson over politics, eventually the two great presidents would be friends again. Both would die on the same day (Adams would reportedly say "Thomas Jefferson still survives" even though Jefferson actually had died earlier in the day.) on July 4, 1826.
