Answer: North Manchester

Marshall was born in North Manchester, Indiana (near Fort Wayne) on March 14, 1854 to Daniel and Martha Marshall.
2. From what college/university did Marshall graduate?

Answer: Wabash

Marshall graduated with honors from Wabash College in June 1873.
3. While in college, Marshall, along with the student newspaper, were sued by a traveling lecturer for defamation. Who did Marshall get to defend himself and newspaper against the suit?

Answer: Benjamin Harrison

The lecturer hired Lew Wallace, Civil War general and the author of "Ben-Hur", to represent her in the suit. Marshall traveled to Indianapolis and hired Harrison, also a Civil War general, but a little over ten years away from becoming president, to defend. Harrison won the suit and charged the defendants nothing.
4. How great was the age difference between Marshall and his wife?

Answer: 18

Marshall was engaged to Catherine Hooper in the 1870's but she died shortly after. Marshall dated after that but it wasn't till the middle 1890's that he met Lois Kimsey, a deputy county clerk. Marshall, then 41, married the 23 year old Kimsey on October 2, 1895.
5. Who did Marshall defeat in the general election of 1908 to become governor of Indiana?

Answer: James Watson

Watson, before running for governor of Indiana, served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1895-97 and then from 1899-1909. He also served in the U.S. Senate from 1916 to 1933. In the 1908 election, Marshall defeated Watson by 15,000 votes. He actually polled more votes in the state than did the Democratic candidate for president, William Jennings Bryan.
6. Where was the Democratic National Convention of 1912 held that nominated Marshall for vice-president to run with Woodrow Wilson?

Answer: Baltimore

Wilson won the nomination on the 46th ballot. The convention then moved and nominated Marshall as a geographic balance to Wilson (Wilson's New Jersey to Marshall's Indiana).

Answer: Joseph Bristow of Kansas

Bristow served one term in the U.S. Senate, from 1909 to 1915. While Marshall's quote does not appear in the "Congressional Record", it was heard by several people who were in the Senate chamber that day.

Marshall was the vice-president to successfully win re-election since John C. Calhoun in 1828. A period of 88 years.

Essay, a correspondent for the "Baltimore Sun", was sent to tell the vice-president of the situation a few days after Wilson's massive stroke. The shock of the moment so affected Marshall that he was unable to acknowledge Essay as he left the room. Marshall would not be allowed to see the president until the last day of Wilson's term, 18 months later.
10. Where did Marshall die?

Answer: Washington D.C.

Marshall died while visiting Washington D.C. on June 1, 1925 of a heart attack. He was buried in the Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
