Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which world leader said, "Strength lies not in defense but in attack"?

Answer: Adolf Hitler

Hitler put this principle into practice when he invaded Poland, effectively starting World War II. Variant versions of this quote, such as "the best means of defense is attack", are in fact a long-standing, old cliché that has often been used to justify pre-emptive strikes and wars of aggression of all kinds.
2. Who said, "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we"?

Answer: George W. Bush

Bush was referring to the threat of terrorism. I'm sure he meant to say that we will never stop thinking of ways to protect ourselves against the threat, but it didn't come out quite right. His opponents may argue that what he actually said correctly describes his policy decisions. Perhaps a Freudian slip?
3. While we're on the subject of terrorism, which current world leader said, "The only thing responsible for those terrorist attacks was 'terrorism'."?

Answer: Tony Blair

It may sound like a Bushism, but the British Prime Minister actually uttered that tautology.
4. Which dictator is credited with the following quote: "A single death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic."?

Answer: Josef Stalin

According to some estimates, over twenty million Russians were killed during Stalin's violent purges. Despite his quote, it was a tragedy of enormous proportions.
5. Which American politican is quoted as saying, "I had other priorities in the 60s than military service"?

Answer: Dick Cheney

Like George W. Bush, Dick Cheney attended Yale University. Unlike the president who maintained a C average, Cheney was kicked out of Yale due to his poor grades.
6. Which President of the United States said, "I glance at the headlines just to kind of get a flavor for what's moving. I rarely read the stories, and get briefed by people who probably read the news themselves."?

Answer: George W. Bush

It's good to know that the president's advisers "probably read the news."
7. Who said, "Great liars are also great magicians"?

Answer: Adolf Hitler

The Nazi party effectively used propaganda to promote themselves. Some would argue that today's American political conventions are filled with magical lies.
8. Which famous world leader uttered the words, "Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm."?

Answer: Winston Churchill

George W. Bush may embody the meaning of this quote, as evidenced by his "catastrophic success" evaluation of the Iraq war, but it was Churchill who is credited as the author.
9. Which leader, reflecting his fondness for censorship, said, "Ideas are more powerful than guns. We would not let our enemies have guns, why should we let them have ideas."?

Answer: Josef Stalin

Throughout the communist era of the Soviet Union, the state controlled the press, stifling any dissenting views. In a democratic society, it is imperative to have an independent press, free from governmental control or influence.
10. It is often said that a strong leader should have strong beliefs. Who said: "I know what I believe. I will continue to articulate what I believe and what I believe - I believe what I believe is right"?

Answer: George W. Bush

We're not sure what he believes from that quote. But at least we know that whatever it is that he believes, he believes that his belief is the right belief to believe.
