The first Academy Awards (now more commonly known as the Oscars) ceremony was a private dinner on May 16th, 1929. The Best Picture award went to the movie "Wings". Fifteen awards were given out in a ceremony that lasted just 15 minutes. Herbert Hoover was sworn into office on March 3, 1929.
