Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was US president at the time of the Battle of the Black Sea?

Answer: Bill Clinton

As seen in the film "Black Hawk Down" (2001). Unfortunately, though the US Army won the battle, they lost the war - Clinton pulled the USA out of Somalia afterwards, wasting the efforts of the US Army in Mogadishu. Note that the name of this battle has nothing to do with the Black Sea that borders S.E. Europe and S.W. Asia.
2. Who was US president at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis?

Answer: John F Kennedy

This was the high point of his presidency, he forced the Soviets to back down and remove their missiles, in return for an assurance the US wouldn't invade Cuba, and the removal of obsolete US strategic nuclear weapons from Turkey.
3. Who was US president when the song "American Pie" first hit the charts?

Answer: Richard Nixon

At almost nine minutes long, it's one of the longest pop songs ever recorded. Thirty years after being written by Don McLean, the song about "the day the music died" still remained popular.
4. Who was US president at the time of the Six Day War?

Answer: Lyndon B Johnson

Though massively outnumbered, Israel's military commanders performed masterfully, not only winning the war, but tripling the size of the territory Israel controlled, and inflicting massive casualties on the invading Arabs. President Johnson's daughter was married in December of the same year.
5. Who was US president at the time of the Waco Siege?

Answer: William Clinton

The Waco Siege, which ended in the deaths of 76 members of a controversial religious sect known as the Branch Davidians, took place in 1993. Most of the deaths occurred when the building in which they were hiding caught fire during an assault by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
6. Who was US president at the time of the Kent State Shooting?

Answer: Richard Nixon

After protesting students caused considerable damage to the city of Kent, Ohio national guard units were called out. They were hit by rocks, bottles and tear gas canisters by protesting college students, and, feeling their position in an open field vulnerable, and worried about snipers, they marched up Blanket Hill. Things got confusing after that, with an officer swinging his arm around suddenly, his service revolver in hand.

Some guardsmen interpreted this as an order to fire, and a 13-second volley of rifle fire ensued, resulting in the deaths of four KSU students, and injuries to nine others.
7. Who was US president when "The Hunt for Red October" was published?

Answer: Ronald Reagan

Tom Clancy was an insurance salesman in Maryland, and "Red October", published in 1984, was his first book. It didn't sell well, until it was read and recommended by President Reagan, who declared it "non-put-downable". After that, it became a huge bestseller. Clancy's 1997 Ryanverse novel, "Executive Orders," is dedicated to Reagan, reading "To Ronald Wilson Reagan, 40th president of the United States: the man who won the war."
8. Who was US president during the Suez Crisis?

Answer: Dwight D. Eisenhower

In 1952, Egypt's monarchy was removed in a military coup. The new government nationalized the Suez Canal, in which the British and French government owned a substantial stakes; Israeli shipping was also blocked from going through. The invasion went well, but the US backed Egyptian President Nasser; Eisenhower threatened to sell US holdings of the British pound, an act which would have led to the collapse of the British currency.

The crisis made Nasser very popular among Arabs. France's DGSE afterwards made several unsuccesful attempts on Nasser's life.
9. Who was US president when the Korean War began?

Answer: Harry S. Truman

Under the auspices of the United Nations, the United States and her allies sent troops to Korea to repel a Communist invasion, backed by the Communist China, resulting in the division of the Korean peninsula at the 38th parallel.
10. Who was US president when the original "Star Wars" movie was released?

Answer: Jimmy Carter

The limited theatre release was made as early as possible - the second half of the movie was delivered to the theatre just as the movie began!
