Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Marty Byrde is a successful financial adviser who has a hidden client - a Mexican drug cartel. When his family is threatened, they move to the rural Ozark Mountains of Missouri from which Midwestern city?

Answer: Chicago

Jason Bateman stars in and directed the first episode of Ozark, "Sugarwood". This first episode showcases both the busy Chicago financial district and the beautiful mountain lake country of rural Missouri.
2. Crime drama fans note some thematic similarities between "Ozark" and which very successful AMC series?

Answer: Breaking Bad

Jason Bateman was known for quirky comedies, such as "Arrested Development", much as Bryan Cranston, of "Breaking Bad" fame, was known for "Malcolm in the Middle". Both shows feature a professionals that are drawn into a life of crime, and take very well to their new roles.
3. Marty first hears of The Lake of the Ozarks from his business partner, who uses what phrase to refer to the rural Missouri lake?

Answer: Redneck Riviera

The far western Gulf Coast of Florida, around Apalachicola, is better known as the Redneck Riviera, but the phrase also fits for Lake of the Ozarks, MO. Lake of the Ozarks is a man made lake formed by damming the Osage River, creating a lake over 94 miles long and with over 1,500 miles of shoreline on the many sidearms that are drowned mountain creeks and tributary rivers.

The phrase "coast line longer than the state of California" is oft repeated in the first episode of "Ozark".
4. Marty buys two businesses to help him launder money. One is the Blue Cat restaurant/marina; which is the other?

Answer: Lickety Splitz

Lickety Splitz is a "gentlemen's club", better known as a strip club, or other even less savory terms. Rule #1 of money laundering is to use businesses that deal in cash, as both of Marty's choices do. Marty's business acumen turns around the failing Blue Cat, and his cutthroat ruthlessness gains him ownership of Lickety Splitz, and more than he bargained for.
5. Ruth Langamore is the young but smart leader of her hillbilly family in the TV show "Ozark". How does Ruth plan to kill leading man Marty, but ends up killing her kin instead?

Answer: Electrified boat dock

Actress Julia Garner plays the savvy Ruth Langamore. She rigs a metal ladder extending into the water from a boat dock with high voltage electricity to kill Marty, but changes her mind due to conflicted feelings about Marty. She later used the same rig to kill her two older male family members when they were going after Marty.
6. Jonah Byrde, the young son of Marty in "Ozark", gets an assault rifle in episode 9, "Coffee, Black". How does the preteen boy come to own this firearm?

Answer: Has an older friend buy it

Jonah is a young man that is curious about death. He gets an adult acquaintance, who appears to me mentally deficient, to buy the Mini-14 rifle legally at the local variety store. Despite rousing the suspicion of the clerk by indicating he was buying the weapon for someone else (which is illegal), the clerk allows the man to change his answer and the sale goes through. Jonah does try to shoot someone later in the series, but can't.
7. What is the tagline for the 2016 TV series "Ozark", starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney? The phrase indicates their desperate situation in the Ozark tourist attraction.

Answer: Their Last Resort

Bateman and Linney's characters, and their two kids, flee a very bad situation in Chicago to the rural backwaters of the man made Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri. They continue their illegal activity there, their "last resort" to stay alive and appease the violent drug cartel that is watching them.
8. On the TV series "Ozark", what device is used at the beginning to foreshadow each episode?

Answer: Symbols inside the "O" logo

Four symbols are shown inside the larger "O" of the "Ozark" title at the beginning of each episode. The symbols are also shaped to spell "z-a-r-k". They represent key points in episode.
9. Why are Jacob and Darlene Snell, poppy growers on "Ozark", resentful about the lake?

Answer: Flooded out their family land

The Snells had a long history in the Ozark Mountains, probably "hill people" that had a streak of independence and a history of lawlessness. Before Bagnell Dam was completed in 1931, the residents of the hundreds of miles of mountain valleys were displaced from their ancestral homesteads.
10. At the end of season 1 of "Ozark", Marty Byrde's main partner is engaged in what profession?

Answer: Growing poppies locally

Marty brokers a deal between his Mexican drug cartel client and local poppy/heroin strongman Jacob Snell. However, a discourteous remark by Del, the cartel rep, causes Darlene Snell to...terminate...the deal soon after it's made. Marty is forced into a partnership with the Snells, which will no doubt be the main theme of Season 2.
