"I'm very curious...is this a tournament that was announced for all FT players? Where would I find an announcement like that (in case there's something similar in the future)?"

I don't think there was an announcement as it wasn't an official FT tournament, but it's been going for about five years and the site was much smaller then so I expect word got round. (I can't account for Lesley not knowing, lol.) I can't remember how I heard about it - I think someone who was a regular invited me to play, I think about three or four years ago. I played for a while, then stopped but I went back to it last year; I know I'm not the only one who dipped in and out. I used to derive my enjoyment from watching players like jules44, miffy42, hammerdjh, schoonie, etc., make blisters on the scoreboard - those guys are so fast they make my eyes water.

((Yes, Anton, USA vs. UK will cease to exist.))

Perhaps, this one insignificant aspect of the battle will cease to exist but there are a plethora of games, in which, we can continue our competition with the UK ;-)

It's crystal clear now, Flopsy, so thank you. And congrats to the UK!

"I know I'm not the only one who dipped in and out."

Nope. You weren't the only one. I stopped playing because it became boring. It was too easy being invincible.

Oh no! I hope there is a remedy for this. These four tournaments are so much fun!

And while they are officially called US v. UK And Commonwealth, the truth is, it's really US v. The World. If you don't sign up for the U.S. of A., you're playing for the UK and flying that flag beside your name. Ultimately, it just made it more fun, though.

I didn't play at all in January, but was all geared up for February, and had no idea these were closing. They are such pillars of the FT site!

Mel, will you keep us updated on any changes? I hope, hope, hope there is a solution for this.

I'll start playing again for the rest of January and maybe Pengy can come up with an alternative.

"They are such pillars of the FT site!"

Depends on how you define pillars. Forget the number of people who have registered for FT - there are currently 7232 people online, and roughly 50 players in this tournament. That's .66% of active players. Surely a real pillar is something that's accessible to all, and played by more than 1%?

To most who actually played the tournaments, they would agree with Elle. You didn't, and disagree. Big shock there.

" To most... "
Well, I can't argue with facts like that.

How do you define pillar?

You say you can't argue it but you still do.

Laughing aside, the game was a pillar for those who played it for months and months and even years. You NEVER played it, yet you still care to argue against it being one for some players. Why do you care to voice your opinion about something you never took part in?

It was a private tournament that brought me here, and I've played in about twenty over the years. (Down to one now, since playing all in all of them became a chore.)

You don't seem to have made the best job of interpreting my words, or I haven't expressed myself well enough, so I'll see if I can make my point a little more clearly. Here goes.

Why join a site that generally attracts people with brains, and proceed to prove that you are even cleverer than they are? What's the compulsion to demonstrate your superiority?

This isn't about superiority. This is about you telling someone that they are wrong, even though that person clearly knows more about this than you do. Elle calls the USA/UK game a pillar of FT, and she is right. That game could very well be older than I am. I know it existed when I was still newish. When something has been around that long, and played consistently, damn right it has become a pillar.

Again, she calls the game a pillar, and you don't. As someone who never played the game, who are you to tell someone that did play the game what it means to them and the site?

Again you have misunderstood, and I am past caring. I could try once more to explain, but there really isn't any point. You'll believe what you want to believe, and I shall not try to disabuse you. Have fun on your little cloud.

I haven't misunderstood anything. Stop trying to avoid the real issue here.

This site generally attracts people with brains... I try to prove I'm better than they are every single time I play a game. It's called competition. Why would I play any game but not to win - even if I don't? I'm often not better, I'm reconciled to sometimes being much worse, but the win lasts only until that game is replaced by the next, which might take a day or might take only an hour.

The main USA/UK challenge tournament was always listed on the page showing the "most popular" private tournaments on FT and it would have been a pretty easy task to find the game and register for it had anyone been interested. Or they might have got an invitation, or seen the link on a team board... it wasn't a deadly secret, just a tournament that some people played over a long period, some ducking in and out as Anton and I did. We enjoyed it; when we didn't, we gave it a rest for a bit. But for those who played it a lot it was part of their FT experience. It's up to each individual to decide how significant a part it was and/or if it was a pillar of FT for them; I only know that I'm sorry to see it go and I don't see why anyone who never played it needs to get aerated about it, it did no harm to anyone else after all.

You know Flopsy, we could keep it going. All we'd need is one player from each side to manually add up the scores.

What we really need is someone with a webserver who could host the calculations... I'm not sure how the sums work, worth asking Pengy if manual is possible?

I'm sure it's possible. Do you know Pengy?

Er no, I don't - I always thought the mysterious Pengy was someone else, lol.
