Subject: Most Impressive Scene in a Movie

Posted by: Caseena
Date: Sep 03 13

What's the most impressive thing you've ever seen that was staged for a film? I'm not talking about feats in the real world that happened to be filmed, like the moon landings--I mean something that was scripted and set up for a movie.

Mine is from "Fitzcarraldo," when the natives haul that steamboat up the hill, inch by inch.

There are many that come to mind, several on this board in fact. But the one I've been thinking about lately is Peter O'Toole's "I deny you" monologue in "The Lion in Winter".

"My life, when it is written, will read better than it lived..."

Perfectly written and perfectly acted.

The scene in Marathon Man where Laurence Olivier tortures Dustin Hoffman with dental tools to get information that Hoffman does not have. Hoffman desperately tries every answer he can think of to satisfy Olivier but Olivier is convinced that Hoffman is holding back information. Aaaaaargh!

I've just thought of a better one. The scene in 'Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence' where David Bowie kisses a Japanese commander to save the life of a fellow soldier.

The return of Noodles after his exile in the fantastic 'Once Upon a Time in America'... The smile on the face of Fat Moe when he sees his friend for the first time in decades is priceless.

I just learned that one of the first scenes of "12 Angry Men," when the jurors enter their room, was taken in one shot. It's a long scene and introduces us to them, and I found that very impressive.

The extended fight scene between John Wayne and his brother-in-law, which started at the tavern and ended across town, in "The Quiet Man" - wow!

For me, the most powerful, scene was in "The Bridge on the River Kwai." It occurred near the end, when the character played by Alec Guinness(Colonel Nicholson), in the midst of trying to prevent the destruction of 'his' bridge, comes to realize that what he is doing could well be considered collaboration.

That being said, "The Quiet Man" is one of my favorite movies, and that fight scene is outstanding.

The marvellous scene in 'Lawrence of Arabia' when Lawrence (Peter O'Toole) dons the dishdasha and keffiyeh for the first time, and wants to see how he looks. There he is, stuck in the middle of the desert, not a mirror within a thousand kilometres, so he pulls out the khanjar, the curved knife, and holds it up like a looking-glass. Brilliant!

The ending of The Sixth Sense when Bruce Willis’ character realizes he’s dead. I love the look on his face when he realizes his wedding ring is on the floor instead of his finger, he stumbles as he thinks of how he “saw only what he wanted to see” as Cole told him ghosts do, etc. Brilliant acting.
