Subject: Most Impressive Scene in a Movie

Posted by: Caseena

What's the most impressive thing you've ever seen that was staged for a film? I'm not talking about feats in the real world that happened to be filmed, like the moon landings--I mean something that was scripted and set up for a movie.

Mine is from "Fitzcarraldo," when the natives haul that steamboat up the hill, inch by inch.

Jill's arrival scene in 'Once Upon a Time in the West'.

This may have something to do with the magnificently surging swell of music composed by the late, great Ennio Morricone but this scene never fails to send shivers down my spine. The rising crane shot. The slow revelation of a western town in its nascent stage. The "West" being born/created/forged. Simple yet brilliant.

And the following scenes of Jill travelling through Monument Valley as she travels to meet her husband are also visually impressive.

I'll throw something in here (nice idea for a thread, by the way). I was always partial to the baptism scene near the end of The Godfather (part I). The juxtaposition between the baptism part with Michael Corleone renouncing Satan and all his works and the parts showing what was going on elsewhere at that same time were quite impressive. Such a fine, upstanding man, that Michael Corleone.

From 'The Pianist'. How Wladyslaw Szpilman (Adrien Brody) could play so impressively like that under the conditions he was in is shocking.

I could agree with that. Mine is the chariot race from Ben-Hur:

These were REAL stunts back then. Way more impressive then all the CGI that we have to see today. Everyone was so much more talented then.

Pulp Fiction. Starting at the moment Vincent Vega talking to himself in the bathroom then finds Mia Wallace OD on the couch all the way until they are driving back in the car with her looking like pure death. The whole thing is priceless. Never tire of that part.
