I meant 1.4 advancement for all of that division. It's like you said the amount decreases as you reach the higher divisions.

I agree with Dire Wolf.
I used to keep track of all my scores in previous GCs, and the Brain Twist always seemed to give the exact same bonus whether I scored 7 or 8 or 10. (Per level, of course.)
Keeping track got very tiresome and made me not want to play, so I don't do it anymore, but I did learn a lot about how the scores worked while I did.

Be careful in agreeing with me too often, you'll find yourself on the wrong side of the fence.

Eraucci - my comments were about getting the minimum score for credit, 5/10 vs. 10/10. I either flunked the Brain Twists or got 10/10. I don't know or paid attention to advancement % for scores such as 7/10 or 8/10.

Now I can't remember who else asked what. The 200 points earned is the same for 5/10 or 10/10. Please do try it out for yourself by getting 5/10 one day and 10/10 the next.

Wesley is leader of the team I am on & daBomb is a teammate. Their comments came up in a discussion on the team and a private message. Right now Wesley is having a heck of a good time on vacation. I doubt he will come to this thread and answer the question. The designer of the Ascension Quest is more likely to prefer we figure this one out on our own. (the last sentence is an opinion so please don't debate it.)

End.

Hang on, MiraJane, what you said was "Go for all ten answers in the daily Brain Twist, not just enough to get credit." I'm ignoring the 200 FT points, they're not what the GC is about, all that count there are the advancement points. Your earlier statement seemed to imply that these changed according to how many correct answers you got above the minimum 5/10, now you seem to be saying what DireWolf and I said - that the advancement points are the same no matter how many you score above that.

Note that I am talking about the Brainteaser and nothing else - you do get more advancement points for scoring well in the subject categories but no one's disputing that.

That's why I was hoping an Admin. or one of the other more knowledgeable people on here would buzz by with some clarity...like I said a few posts ago. Sometimes these back and forth discussions between players just lead to more confusion.

Well, I do have all the GC badges so I thought I understood how the scoring went (apart from the finer decimal places on Wes's spreadsheets, lol) which is why what MiraJane said at the start of this thread was confusing and why I disagreed in the first place.

I think I'll just go back to humming quietly in the corner.

I said "knowledgeable people". That includes you, right?

I'm ready to tuck my tail and crawl back into my den..nice and shady in there.

Sometime during the past the 24hrs. someone, I don't remember and I'm not going back to check this thread, brought up the 200 points awarded. Originally I didn't mention them at all. You get 200 points for 5/10 up to 10/10. That does not change.

The advancement % is more for 10/10 than for 5/10. I stand by that and when I was challenged, I wrote who told me that. I trust their word and saw the difference myself.

And I doubt an admin will settle it. Again, this seems to be a "need to figure this out for yourself" thing. Unless one is fortunate to have teammates that know more and are willing to share knowledge.

If you don't want to go for 10/10 and settle for getting the minimum 5/10 for the credit for completing the Brain Twist, fine with me.

"End" in my previous message was because I was at brother's house and using his dragonware. I didn't know it would add in the word End when I wanted it to end the message.

Well. Wondering if is possible for an average player to make it to level ten? Made it to level nine last time and then stopped....i will have to watch progress more carefully...

Ok then. To get this thread back to the original question, my simple advice would be this:

1. Play every question set for the whole Global Challenge.
2. Make sure every Brain Twist you play counts(whatever you think that means).
3. Play as many of the * and ** categories as you can.
4. Try to have fun and not let yourself get stressed out by the daily grind of it. Otherwise you might quit before the Challenge ends.

I think it's possible. And there's always the next one if you miss it this time. :)

I agree about suggestions that have been made for making it to Immortal. When I did it, I played all 4 ** categories, and one * category + Impossible every set. I also played the Brain Twist every day. I played every single set until I reached Braniacs, then I played enough to keep me in the top 30, but stopped worrying about playing every single game.

Even if you miss some questions or have slightly slower times, the bonuses you get for playing ** categories usually makes up for it. It's a long haul, and some people do drop out as they get into the higher divisions and burn themselves out, so you can sometimes come up from behind and get into the top 30 if you keep at it.

susandarn-
(like the name btw) yes, it is possible for an average player to get to level 10. I'm not a top player and I got it the second time I decided to try for Immortal. The first time, I made it to 96.5 of the way thru level 9.

If you find some of the Brain Twists, such as the logic puzzles, really difficult to wade through, I recommend going to the main category and playing every type you have problems with. I never conquered the logic puzzles, but I was able to do Fractured Words correctly.

Some categories, such as Television and Literature, because ridiculous to play (yes, another opinion but I know others agree) in the higher levels. If these are your go to strong categories in the lower levels, now is the time to take quizzes in a new category, such as Geography or Hobbies, so you can switch to those topics in levels 8 and 9.

Questions do repeat so try to remember the correct answers for ones you got wrong. They will show up again.

When * and ** get "paired", such as Animals has one star and Animals by Region is a ** topic, I would play the * first and hope some of the questions would show up in the ** topic. Sometimes it worked out, sometimes it didn't but ... We can hope.

Good luck!

Experience helps. Average players can probably make Immortal, but not likely on their first try. It is useful experimenting a little to determine your best categories, since they change as you move up to higher levels. I would not advise always playing all four double-starred categories or never playing an unstarred one. Yes, stars do give you a boost in advancement, but not as much as some people think. A score of 1455 in an unstarred category is better than a 675 in a double-starred category. If you have a best category where you regularly get 15/15 even at the higher levels, play it even when it is unstarred and don't play double-starred if you don't know anything about the category. Global Challenge is a marathon. What knocks most people out of contention is missing too many games because it requires enormous self-discipline to play 12 games every day and every Brain Twist for over four months. If a player is thinking how many games can I miss and still have a shot, they don't have the right mindset for Global Challenge.

Re: "If a player is thinking how many games can I miss and still have a shot, they don't have the right mindset for Global Challenge."

It's not usually necessary to play every single set to make it to Immortal, though, if your scores are high enough to be competitive. A lot of the people who make it to Immortal miss several sets on the way and/or significantly cut down on the number of sets they play once they pass into the Immortals division. In the long run, missing a few sets doesn't make that much of a difference.

Yes, but the original post was asking about the difficulty for an average player. You're right about being able to miss some games and still make it, but only if your scores are high enough in the ones you do play. I still think that somebody that considers themselves an average player should try to play every set if they can to maximize their chances. When I first joined the site, I think I made it to Immortal in the 2nd full GC I played in and I would have called myself an average player at the time. But I did make sure to play every set that time.

I was attempting to give advice for "the average player". To be honest, most players who reach Immortal are above average. Sure, I could skip 100 games and still make Immortal, but that is bad advice to average players. I am not a superstar player, but I am definitely above average, and I won't play all four double-starred games because if I tried, I'd score something like 435 on one of them because there are plenty of categories I know nothing about. (1960s Music, for example). A balanced approach is best, and the best approach is to try to play every single game for the entire run, which I did July-November 2013, when I played all 1518 possible games. If a player wants to take a break, take it after reaching Immortal level.

Thank you everyone! Another question....why do players replay the challenge when they have previously completed the challenge? I see lots of immortals playing again and doing very well. are they competing against each other? Btw name really is susan.
