But is there really such a thing as an off topic discussion in a GC thread? How long will it be before we see a pom related question in general...or impossible, or possibly in Oceania apparently? You could just claim it as pre test information cramming.

Hmmm that makes perfect sense about waiting to see how the herd is scoring, especially if it is one of those "iffy" categories where you find yourself just as likely to post a 1450 as you are to post 850. Thanks for the tip, although it is going to ruin the practicality tactic of playing just before noon or midnight (game time) to catch two rounds at once.

I agree about checking to see how others are scoring in a category before playing. The difficulty level within a category can vary greatly from set to set. Yesterday's morning set was pretty kind to me and I was able to get three 15/15. That's not bad for being in Division 7. But the afternoon set was so hard, I had to double check and make sure I didn't graduate out of the division without knowing it. One more thing I want to add about playing your strong categories at the higher divisions(Div. 7 through Div. 10). This is fine advice if you're playing in normal mode, but when you're playing Hardcore where you have to get at least 10/15 in 130 seconds I've found that the questions in my strongest topics become so obscure that I can't reach those requirements sometimes. I usually end up doing what was said earlier, looking to see what topics people are scoring well in and play them instead.

Oh, lets not wait that long!

What do we think of the question pools in general? I've just checked out the date of some of the quizzes used in the GC, they range from 2000 to 2008. Many of them, especially in the early stages, crop up time and time again in each GC

Does anyone agree that a shake up might be in order, such as drawing the question pool from newer quizzes, or from the New Question game? Personally, it's something I'd like to see. It'd be fun to see how all us old timers would do with new questions.

Be careful what you wish for- I have spent at least two entire days trying to make sure I got enough for a brain twist, (good job ASA!) especially when some depend on previous answers so one false move and you've blown them all. I missed one in that challenge but normally just managed to score enough not to with the other handful of the ultimate tests as I was determined to do everything I could not to drop a single brain twist if possible.

As for the question pools they seemed to turn over fairly suddenly. I played maybe 4-5 challenges and was becoming fairly jaded conjuring up the same replies over and over again, but when they shifted and knocked me to my knees over previously such familiar areas it was like reciting the same play night after night with slight variations. And if that happens in hard core (which it did) then it's really Goodnight Vienna. You have no solid familiar foundations to build on any more as even the ones you used to know when they came up become almost as obscure as the sports and TV.

I'm probably wrong as usual, but I thought there was an expansion of the question pools quite recently. I know not too long ago Terry made a change allowing more of the Question Quest submissions to be used in the hourly games. I noticed the difference in some of the Easier game subjects that players were blazing through (Lit., Music, Movies...). Times jumped from the mid to low teens back up to around the mid twenty second range. I'm talking about in the Champion division. I think some of the Expert and Team Heroes categories were affected by this too. I'm just not positive about the GC being included in this, but I think so.

Pretty sure the NQs aren't used in the GC... yet. They probably should be for the regular categories at some point in some capacity, though I wouldn't mind still seeing some quiz-sourced questions pop up too (and yes, this is said in knowing the double-starred ones will still have to be entirely quiz-sourced).

It'd probably shoot my chances of winning the HC badge for many years, but I think it'd be a decent addition from a variety perspective, and perhaps making a couple of the later untouchable categories more appetising. Only thing is since FC doesn't have a NQ category (well, it does, but it was removed early as far as I can tell) it'd probably have to be phased out as a regular category in fairness.

I'd also rather see either all NQs in the Easy/Smartest or half and half - don't like the either/or situation as it is.

I've been in 3 Global Challenges and I'm already weary of the same questions turning up. And personally I've only seen 1 of my 50 submitted questions in a game other than the NQ game. It was the only question that had a rating over .40...

Yeah, I wasn't sure about it. But the double starred categories are the ones I thought the new questions might show up in, just because those topics usually mirror the "Who's the Expert?" game pretty close.

"I'd also rather see either all NQs in the Easy/Smartest or half and half - don't like the either/or situation as it is."

I don't have a problem with the way things are set up now. I really haven't seen much of a change in the hourly games since the expansion of the question pools. It's only in certain subjects that the difference becomes apparent.

What do you think the ratio is now, 60/40 old versus new? Or something else? I'm thinking that making it all of one or the other would be a huge mistake. If it becomes all new QQ questions in the hourly games, it will be like playing 5 different versions of the 'New Question Game', except all the questions would be neatly divided up by their various levels of difficulty.

Don't get tired yet, there's still a long way to go. When you get way up in the higher divisions, you'll be happy as a clam to see some questions that you recognize.

Dire...a couple of comments back you said something about having to get 10/15 in 130 seconds in Hardcore to score. I did not know that. Not that it is critical now - I am playing in Normal. But in future I would like to try Hardcore (if I am lucky enough to get Immortal in Normal), so how does that work? If you don't get 10/15 inside of 130 seconds you get no advancement at all?

That's right, Lizarddrinking - in Hardcore if you get 10/15 (or more) in 130 seconds (or less) you get advancement points, if you get 9/15 (or less) in 131 seconds (or more) you get nothing. Which is why Hardcore players hate the numbers 9 and 131.

When I played Hardcore the first time, which was when I got my badge, there were only the five * categories to "choose from" - in other words there was no choice, we had to play them no matter what. That's not so bad in the early stages but as the GC progressed and the categories were more difficult it was a struggle to get 10/15 in anything, and there were some sessions when I got no points at all. I wasn't alone in that, it happened to almost everyone, but it was nonetheless depressing. It's not as bad now, the introduction of the ** categories gives alternatives, and you have to be very unlucky not to find something you can score in - even if you only get points in one or two topics that's better than nothing.

I have to admit that I've only done Hardcore two and a bit times - I swore after the first time that I'd never do it again but, following the example of Sir Steve Redgrave at Barcelona who swore never to go near a boat again, I changed my mind when the ** cats came in because I wanted to see if they'd made it easier. Wesley told me it wasn't easier but I didn't take his word for it and just had to try it for myself. That's when I got to Immortal in Hardcore. I swore never to go near Hardcore again. Then Terry introduced the badgelet for top scorers in both modes so I had to go Hardcore for as long as it took to get the pesky HC badgelet. I swear I'm never going near it again...

"When I played Hardcore the first time, which was when I got my badge..."

Way to rub it in Flopsy. ;-)

I've been playing Hardcore after getting the badge(took 2 or 3 times, not quite bunny level but not bad) just to prove to myself that it wasn't a fluke and to see if I could improve. Plus to grab the various new badges along the way. The two All Rounder badgelets and envy inspiring HC Immortal badge.

@DireWolf: Expert doesn't use NQs and can't - the expert topics are sourced from the named quiz subcategories. NQs aren't subcategorised at all, and it would be a massive headache to sort them more comprehensively.

My main issue with Easy/Smartest is that either you get a set with -all- NQs or -all- quiz-sourced ones. I may be offbase on this last bit since I haven't checked it with anyone, but I think people in the same set can get one or the other, which means you can get fairly unmeaningful results. I'd just rather see half and half (or some meaningful proportion) to homogenise things out a bit, but eh I'll deal either way.

--

I'm about 100 quizzes behind since I started late but this is my first proper HC try (though I'm approaching it fairly relaxedly). I definitely don't think I could have done this having to blunder through, say, Sports and TV with no alternative so I really appreciate having the double-starred ones from that perspective. BTW, thanks for mentioning that mini badge - I don't play Impossible usually so if I get a good all-round set I'll try to remember to play it and give myself a shot. :)

Even if the Expert game doesn't use the QQ questions, there was an expansion of the categories available and within certain topics(People Themed A-Z, Celebrities A-Z for example), I've noticed some really obscure(even for me) questions popping up. So, I thought the reason was that some of the newer questions might be finding their way into the game. Not the first time I've been wrong, won't be the last.

About those All Rounder badgelets, you definitely need those extra points from the 'Impossible' game to get them. More so for the HC one, but probably both.

Ok this seemed like an appropriate place to gripe....sometimes on the brain twist, the fractured/mad gab style ones really push the bounds of resembling the words they are trying to emulate. To get a few of today's you almost had to assemble a platoon of drunk people and have them read it...waiting for one of them to randomly slur it into recognizability

If there's an inappropriate place to gripe, nobody's told me about it.

I've come across that kind of problem too. Even worse are the Brain Twists with no clear instructions as to what the author is looking for.

For me the worst Brain Twists are those Wordwise quizzes. I simply cannot understand how do those letters and numbers translate to English.
