"Deryni Series" Part 6 "The Bastard Prince" Quiz

Culliecairn was a fortress town which guarded the Coldoire Pass between Eastmarch and Tolan, without first taking control of it the invaders would be unable to invade Eastmarch. Hrorik was the first major casualty and possibly was targeted by Miklos and Marek as retribution to his taking Sudrey of Rhorau, who was a cousin to Marek, as his wife. Lochalyn was the seat of Hrorik, while Carthane and Desse were located in the south.

Answer: Owain

Owain was born in 924 while Uthyr was born in 929. Nygel (born 948) and Jasher (born 951) were actually sons of Uthyr.

Answer: Liesel

Unknown to Michaela, Liesel was actually Rhys Thuryn and Evaine's daughter, Rhysel Thuryn. Elspeth, Agatha and Eithne were all maids at Rhemuth, but not Deryni nor associated with the Camberian Council in any way.

Answer: Miklos nephew's christening

Miklos and Marek had already conquered Culliecarn and this was basically an insult to Rhys Michael and Gwynedd, as Miklos said he was giving his nephew the city as a present at his christening.

Answer: use their powers to turn him into a double agent

Joram, and Tieg were helped into the castle by Liesel in order to restore Cathan and Michaela's Deryni powers. They needed to do this so that they could help release the Haldane potential in Rhys Michael. On their way back to the council they ran across Dimitri, and at first they were going to kill him.

They decided, however, that he could be better utilized as a double agent working against Miklos and Marek.

Answer: Richard Murdoch

It appears it was one of the first compulsions Joram placed on Dimitri (he caused Uduat's horse to buck and trample him). By removing Uduat and replacing him with Richard it removed one of Rhys Michael's enemies and kept him in Rhemuth as the army marched to Eastmarch. The other three were some of the most powerful of the ex-regents and the most volatile of the anti-Deryni faction.

Answer: a bee attack

This was Dimitri's second attempt to take out one of the council, this time it failed, although Albertus and his horse were forced into the river, actually saving his life from the attack.

Answer: Albertus wanted him to mind read Rhys Michael

Albertus was suspicious of the "accidental" death of Uduat and of his own near death experience so he decided to have Dimitri go through Rhys Michael's mind to see if he was somehow responsible. The safe guards Joram placed on Dimitri were too strong and although Dimitri knew he had been tampered with he could not dis-obey the very powerful spell Joram had placed on him.

He also could not allow Albertus to see Rhys Michael's power's, so he was forced to act even though it exposed him as a spy.

Answer: Dimitri ripped his mind through his Deryni powers

Dmitri allowed himself to be implicated in Albertus death. When he was captured and the Lords attempted to confine him and dose him with merasha, he lashed out and destroyed Paulin's mind.

Answer: Hombard of Tarkent

Hombard was sent because he was human and would be heard by the Lords. Valetin was Marek's senior captain. Eugene was a herald but not the deliverer of Miklos terms in Eastmarch and Cosim was Miklos personal healer.

Answer: Sudrey

The Lords of Gwynedd were convinced by Rhys to allow Sudrey to meet as she was capable of simple truth-reading. He felt this, and the fact that she was Deryni would give him a slight advantage in case of deception on Miklos part. The other Lords were in attendance but not in the immediate vicinity of the meeting.

Answer: Marek

It was Marek, although he was disguised as the human Hombard. This was to be an attempt to kill Sudrey, but Miklos and Marek were unaware that Rhys had developed his powers and was able to aid Sudrey. Rhys actually killed Miklos in the battle, although Sudrey was critically injured as well. Cosim was Miklos' personal physician while Valentin was Miklos' advisor. Charis was Marek's wife, and Miklos' sister, but not present. Unfortunately Rhys himself was injured as well.

Answer: Father Derfel

Rhys Michael convinced the northern lords, Graham and Sighere that he was being controlled by the Lords and if anything happened to him he wanted them on the new Regency Council. In order to accomplish this he had a new codicil drawn up which placed them on the council and insured that the old Lords could not replace them after his death.

They had to make sure the codicil was legitimate so it needed everyone's signature witnessed by a priest. Obviously none of the Custodes would do so they had to find a local trustworthy priest at Sudrey's Requiem Mass. Father Derfel was a perfect choice, a rustic country priest who was totally loyal to the true church and God, not the Custodes.

Answer: Saint Ostrythe's Convent

His wound got worse and worse as days progressed. If actually treated properly it probably would have healed fine but the Lords saw this as there chance to rid themselves of Rhys Michael and insure that with a new Regency Council they would maintain their control of Gwynedd. Rhys had told the Lords about his codicil hoping that would insure his safe return home, but they decided even with the codicil they would be better off without the now troublesome king. Dom Queron actually managed to talk to Rhys Michael but he was too late to safe his life, although he did manage to receive last confession and Viaticum.

Answer: Hubert

Upon hearing of Rhys Michael's death The Camberian Council contacted Graham and Sighere and pledged their support. Upon arrival at the funeral a fight erupted. Rhun actually killed Manfred and attempted to kidnap Owain but he was caught and killed by Cathan. Tammaron attempted to hold Michaela hostage but she killed him herself using her Deryni powers. Hubert survived and was banished to a remote unnamed religious house were he died less than a year later, never once having repented of his actions.

This victory insured that Owain's reign would not be a puppet one but it would be another 200 years before the Deryni would even get close to having the rights they once did.
