Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Brion and Kelson are on the deer hunt the hounds flush out rabbits. Who owned the deer hounds?

Answer: Ewan, Duke of Claibourne

Ewan, the Duke of Claibourne had been bragging to Brion for weeks about how good the hounds were. It was a huge source of merriment to all, except Ewan, how rash and undisciplined the hounds really were. Of course part of the problem may have been magical mischief caused by Charissa. Sean and Alaric were together in the border marches and not actually present at the hunt, and although Rogier was he did not own the hounds.
2. Brion Haldane, King of Gwynedd, Prince of Meara and Lord of the Purple March met his untimely death due in part to poisoned wine. Who gave him the wine to drink?

Answer: Colin of Fianna

Colin had been given the wine by a young lady he did not know; it was Charissa, Duchess of Tolan in disguise. Charissa had put merahsa in the wine, which dulled Brion's powers and enabled her to make it appear he had a heart attack, when in reality she had killed him with her Deryni powers. Collin had no idea he had been duped into giving Brion the wine. Merasha doesn't affect humans, except to cause slight drowsiness, so Brion's advisors and friends, being all human, were unaffected. Ian and Mustafa were involved in the plot but he wanted to make sure he was not suspected in the tampering of the wine, so he helped Charissa dupe Colin. Kevin McLean was in no way involved in the plot, although he was present at the hunt.
3. While Kelson and Morgan were talking in the garden a Stenrect crawler attempted to sting Kelson. Morgan quickly and easily killed the nocturnal insect. They then became aware of a female screaming; who was the female?

Answer: Lady Elvira

Elvira's screams alerted the Royal Guard who then attempted to arrest Morgan. Kelson and Morgan quickly explained to the Captain of the guard what had occurred. Morgan was however unsettled, as although the Stenrect had little chance of actually reaching Kelson he couldn't understand how Charissa had managed to get the nocturnal desert insect into the garden to begin with.
4. Who was the Lord Marshall of the first Regency Council which met after Brion's death?

Answer: Ewan, Duke of Claibourne

The position of Lord Marshall was hereditary and descended from the original Duke of Claibourne, Sighere, who was made a Duke in the days of Cinhil I when the lands of Kheldour were conquered and incorporated into the Kingdom of Gwynedd.
5. Jehana was determined to have Alaric Morgan removed from Kelson's Regency Council. Which members voted "innocent" to the charges of treason she put forth?

Answer: Nigel, Arilan, Jared, Kevin, and Morgan

Jehana attempted to start the first meeting of the Regency Council without Kelson being present. It was her determination to get rid of Alaric Morgan whom she considered a bad influence on both her deceased husband Brion and their son Prince (soon to be King) Kelson.

She was convinced if she got a vote to occur before Kelson and Morgan arrived she could get Morgan not only removed from the council but possibly put to death in connection with Brion's death.
6. After the attempt to have Morgan removed from the Council, Ian contacted Charissa using a soldier as a medium. What was the soldier's name?

Answer: Michael DeForest

While Ian could have spoken to Charissa using other sources, a human source provides more power and makes the drain on the user less. Unfortunately there was no way he could hide his work so he was forced to kill the unfortunate guard. He did decide to cause more grief for Morgan as he used the dead man's finger to draw a Griffin, Morgan's symbol, in blood on the wall. John Banner was an alias Sean Derry used while spying. Richard Fitzwilliams was a squire to Kelson and Edmund Lyle was a Torenthi agent Derry killed.
7. In order to trigger Kelson's powers Morgan and Duncan broke into Brion's crypt to retrieve something which should not have been buried with Brion. What was the item they needed?

Answer: Eye of Rom

Jehana had Brion buried so fast in order to make sure Morgan would not be present, as well as to curb her own fears about Brion's death. The Eye of Rom, the Ring of Fire and the Crimson Brooch were talismans for the Haldane family for generations. The Coadjutor wands were used by the Camberian Council and never associated with the Haldane Family. Morgan and Duncan did have a huge shock when they broke into the crypt though - Brion had been shape changed and part of his soul was still trapped in his body. Duncan released his spirit and Brion was finally at rest.
8. The night before Kelson's coronation an attempt was made on Morgan's life. What was the name of the man who led the attempt?

Answer: Edgar of Mathelwaite

Charissa and Ian tried one last time to get rid of Morgan the night before Kelson's coronation. They told him about the death of the young guard Ian had killed earlier and hid their identities. He, and Lord Lawrence and Harold Fitzmartin all saw the dead body and the drawing of the griffin, Morgan's symbol.

They then planted the idea that Morgan was going to kill Kelson. One of the largest ramifications to come of this was Duncan and Morgan learning that they both had the, once thought to be extinct, Deryni healing powers.
9. Duncan and Morgan were concerned that all of the ritual to trigger Kelson's powers had not been fulfilled. They could not figure out what "The Defender's Sign" was. What was meant by "The Defender's Sign?

Answer: Saint Camber's Seal

They thought Morgan was "The Dark Protector" and Duncan "A Spokesman for the Infinite" and of course they knew the Eye of Rom, Ring of Fire and Crimson Brooch were needed. What they could not figure out was what "The Defender's Sign" was. Kelson actually guessed it just as the arcane battle with Charissa began. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael were all archangels, and while certainly capable of being defenders their seals were not the ones Brion intended to be the final trigger to Kelson's powers.
10. After Kelson defeated Charissa he was crowned King of Gwynedd; what was Kelson's full royal name?

Answer: Kelson Cinhil Rhys Anthony Haldane

Two of Kelson's names were for two very famous people in Deryni history, King Cinhil and his youngest son who freed the Haldanes from the Regents, King Rhys Michael, who was himself named after a very famous Deryni healer. When Kelson was crowned it actually appeared to the Deryni present that Camber himself helped crown the king.

This caused Duncan and Morgan especially to wander if the long dead Camber was really watching out for them and protecting young King Kelson.
