Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the show that was running at the Reno Playhouse in Nevada?

Answer: "The Circus of the Mind"

"The Circus of the Mind" is also the name of the first chapter of the book. This show had been running for the past six months at the Reno Playhouse, and was where Scott and Jamie Tyler worked nightly in order to try and earn some extra cash. Scott and Jamie actually lived with Don White, the creator of the show "The Circus of the Mind."
2. According to the poster next to the front door of the Reno Playhouse, what was Bobby Bruce's mystical performance?

Answer: Hypnotist to the stars

Bobby Bruce was one of the five acts that took place during the show. All this information was on a poster outside the theatre which read the following:

"There are many things in this life that cannot be explained. Powers that exist on the edge of our consciousness. Do you dare journey into the world of the paranormal? Be amazed! Be mystified! This is a show you will never forget.

FEATURING:
Swami Louvishni- world famous Indian fakir
Bobby Bruce- hypnotist to the stars
Mr Marvano- master illusionist
Zorro- Escapologist
Scott and Jamie Tyler- telepathic twins

Performance times: 7.30 p.m. & 9.30 p.m.
Tickets: $35-$55 (Senior Citizens half price)"

Every single performance in the show was a complete act, except for Jamie and Tyler who really did have telepathic powers.
3. As part of their act, Jamie asked an audience member to select a word from a newspaper. What was the word that the audience member selected, which Scott accurately repeated back to the rest of the audience?

Answer: "Funeral"

As the first part of their act, Jamie would ask an audience member to select one newspaper from twenty different ones from all across America. He would then ask the same audience member to select one of the sections from the newspaper, and pass it to the person sitting next to them. That audience member would then tear one page out of the section, and pass it to the person behind them. That person would then circle one of the many words on the page. Once this had been done, Scott, who was standing back on the stage, would be able to accurately guess what the circled word was.

In this case, Jamie took the stack of newspapers to a "large, frizzy-haired woman who was wearing pink leggings and an 'I Love Reno' T-shirt." She picked out a copy of the "Los Angeles Times," and chose the Calendar section out of it. She passed it to her husband, who tore a page out of it, and handed it to the Korean tourist behind him. The Korean tourist picked the word "funeral" off the page. Jamie looked down at the page, after which Scott, back on the stage, said "funeral."
4. Despite the fact that they were twins, Scott often had to remind himself that they were twins, as it seemed to him that Jamie was a lot older than he was.

Answer: False

False. It was actually Jamie who looked up to Scott, and thought of him as an older brother.

An excerpt from the book from the chapter "Backstage" reads:
"Jamie often had to remind himself that the two of them were exactly the same age. They were twins. That much at least was certain. And yet he couldn't help thinking of Scott as his older brother. It wasn't just the physical difference between them. For as long as he could remember, Scott had looked after him. Somehow it had never been the other way around."
5. What was Don White's wife's name?

Answer: Marcie

Scott and Jamie Tyler started living with Don and Marcie when they were eleven years old, after their previous foster father committed suicide. Their previous foster father, Ed, was Marcie's sister's husband, and that was how Don and Marcie White came to find out about the twins and their telepathic powers, and eventually brought them to live with them.
6. What were the names of the two men who made the deal with Don White about kidnapping the twins, and who worked for the Nightrise Corporation?

Answer: Kyle Hovey and Colton Banes

Kyle Hovey and Colton Banes were the two men that we first met in the book, as they were sitting in a car outside the Reno Playhouse, waiting for a glimpse of Scott and Jamie. They attended both the 7:00 and the 9:00 show, which was one of the first things that aroused the twins' suspicions. Banes was also the man who murdered Don White.
7. What kind of car had Alicia McGuire rented?

Answer: Ford Focus

Although this is a minor detail, this is the car that Alicia McGuire (who was the woman who was looking for her son that we are introduced to earlier) also uses to save Jamie from being captured by the Nightrise Corporation along with Scott. It was a silver four door Ford Focus that she had rented.

When she had rescued Jamie, one of the windows had been smashed, and one of the wing mirrors had been lost. When Jamie got into the car with her, he noted that while she had managed to have the window repaired, she had not managed to have the mirror replaced, and would probably have to pay dearly for that when she eventually returned the rental.
8. When Jamie and Alicia were in Don White's house, they heard the news that Jamie was being charged for his "uncle's" murder. Before they could leave, the police arrived. How did Jamie and Alicia evade arrest?

Answer: Jamie "hypnotised" one of the policemen into saying there was no one there

Aside from Jamie and Scott's obvious telepathic powers, this is the first evidence we see of either of them being able to control another person's mind.

Jamie wanted to go home to "Uncle" Don, and Alicia agreed to drive him there, and insisted on seeing him in when they got home. While they were inside, a news report came on, saying that Jamie was suspected of murdering Don White. Just as they were about to leave, they heard the wail of police sirens, and hid in the utility room. Unfortunately, as they were about to try and escape, a policeman stepped into the room behind them. It was then that Jamie stepped forward, looked the policeman square in the eye, and said to him "There's nobody here. The room's empty." The policeman, then in a daze, called out to his colleagues that the room was empty.
9. What was the name of the inn that Alicia booked Jamie and herself into after escaping the police at Don White's house?

Answer: The Bluebird Inn

In the afternoon after leaving Don's home (where they had also found a dead Marcie), Alicia had managed to book herself and Jamie into a place called the Bluebird Inn, where she had booked adjoining rooms with connecting doors.
10. Where were the worldwide headquarters of the Nightrise Corporation?

Answer: Hong Kong

The ultimate discovery when reading about it is that the Nightrise Corporation is trying desperately to help the return of the Old Ones. Part of their plan was to locate all the Gatekeepers, and keep them captive so that no one could stop the Old Ones from returning. Kyle Hovey and Colton Banes both worked for the Nightrise Corporation, and were holding Scott captive somewhere.
11. What was the headline on John Trelawney's campaign billboard that Jamie and Alicia drove past?

Answer: "An Honest Change"

Earlier on in the book, we learned that Alicia used to work for John Trelawney, one of the presidential candidates, before her son, Daniel, went missing. Instead of letting her resign, he had put her on indefinite sick leave until she found Daniel, so she still got a pay cheque every month. This was the only way financially that she could continue looking for Daniel.

Jamie and Alicia passed this campaign billboard as they were driving back to Alicia's sister's house after staking out the Nightrise Corporation offices in Los Angeles.
12. What was Alicia's sister's name?

Answer: Caroline

Alicia's sister, Caroline, was a flight attendant who lived in West Hollywood. When Alicia and Jamie went to Los Angeles, Alicia had phoned her sister, who would be away for a week, to ask if she and Jamie could stay in Caroline's house, which she allowed them to.
13. While the twins were still living with Ed and Leanne, why did Jamie get sent to a juvenile hall for a few weeks?

Answer: He slashed a teacher's tyres.

While Jamie and Alicia were at Caroline's house, Jamie decided to give in, and tell Alicia about his mind controlling powers. He didn't really know how to explain it, so she suggested that he start at the beginning.

He told her that he and Scott had been found in a seed box on the side of the road when they were babies. When they were ten years old, they ended up in the custody of a couple called Ed and Leanne in Carson City, Nevada. While they were still at school, there was a teacher called Mr Dempster, who used to pick on the twins, and was always putting them in detention. One day, Jamie decided to get his own back and slashed the tyres of Mr Dempster's car. Unfortunately, he got caught, and was sent to juvenile hall for a couple of weeks.
14. How did Ed commit suicide?

Answer: He hanged himself

After Jamie had gotten back juvenile hall, things were never the same with Ed and Leanne. They were always fighting, and Ed had also started drinking. He'd also lost his job, and had threatened Scott that he and Jamie were going to be separated. Things had gotten fairly ugly, when Scott looked him straight in the eye and said "Nobody's going to separate us. You can go hang yourself." Straight after this, Ed had walked into the garage and hanged himself.

It was after this that both Scott and Jamie had vowed they would never use their powers again, and this was the event that they came to call "The Accident."
15. How old were Scott and Jamie at the time of The Accident?

Answer: 11 years old

Scott and Jamie were both only 11 years old when Ed killed himself. A few weeks after The Accident, Scott and Jamie moved in with Don and Marcie, where Marcie started homeschooling them, and they started performing in Don's show.
