Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the old man Pedro takes Matt to visit, who helps Matt hide from the police?

Answer: Sebastian

After saving Matt from the police, Pedro takes Matt to see Sebastian, an old man who lives in the area known as Poison Town (due to the amount of disease that is there). Sebastian can speak English fluently and agrees to help Matt by giving him some food and a place to sleep.

He also agrees to help Matt to try to find Richard, and disguises him by giving him a dye to rub into his skin, "new" clothes to make him blend in, and gives him a new name- Matteo. Matt is puzzled as to why Sebastian helps him and doesn't hand him over to the police, as he senses a hostility between himself and the old man.

This is cleared up, when Matt asks him, and Sebastian explains to him that he DID want to hand him over to the police. But it was Pedro who dissuaded him, saying that he had seen Matt in his dreams, so he sends Matt and Pedro off to Salamanda's hacienda so that Matt can try to save Richard.
2. How much money does the old man who helped Matt give them?

Answer: One hundred soles

Sebastian accompanies Pedro and Matt on a bus to Ica, which is where Diego Salamanda's hacienda is. In order to help them along, he gives them one hundred soles (the Peruvian currency.) He says that it is a lot of money, and later on, Matt and Pedro use it to buy food and train tickets.
3. What type of bird did Matt hear Salamanda talking about when he was eavevsdropping on his conversation at his hacienda?

Answer: A swan

Matt and Pedro go to Sebastian's hacienda to try to find Richard. They happen to hear Salamanda talking to a woman, saying "The silver swan must be in position five days from now, at midnight exactly." We later learn, the the silver swan is not actually referring to a bird at all.
4. Richard Cole was being held captive at Diego Salamada's "hacienda."

Answer: False

When Richard was kidnapped, Matt was convinced that he had been captured by Salamanda's men. However, when Matt and Pedro get to Salamanda's hacienda, Salamanda is genuinely puzzled to learn that Matt believes he is holding Richard. As it turns out, Richard had actually been captured by the good guys, and we'll learn more about this as we read further.
5. What are Micos's (Matt and Pedro's rescuer's) dying words?

Answer: "Please, tell Atoc..."

The first thing that Matt notices as he dives into Micos' car is that it's the SAME person who captured Richard earlier on in the novel. It is Micos who rescues Matt and Pedro from Salamanda, but in the process, gets himself shot, and eventually dies.

His final words are "Please, tell Atoc...". We later learn that Atoc is in fact his brother, but, unfortunately, we never learn exactly what Micos wanted Matt and Pedro to tell his brother.
6. Which Peruvian city does Micos, shortly before he dies, tell Matt and Pedro to go to?

Answer: Cuzco

OK, we're not talking about the SECOND last thing Micos said before he died, which was, "You must go to Cuzco. On Friday, the temple of Coricancha. In Cuzco. At sunset." He knows that when they get to Cuzco, Matt and Pedro will be able to find help.
7. When they arrive at their destination, Matt sees an advertisement in the paper, telling him to contact the written number any time for help. This advert was obviously placed by the Nexus. Matt calls the number. Who answers?

Answer: Mr Fabian

After eating lunch, Matt sees an advert telling him to contact the Nexus anytime he can on the back of a newspaper, in big bold letters. When he calls the number printed with it, it is Mr Fabian who answers the phone.
8. What is "Coricancha" the ancient word for?

Answer: Golden Courtyard

After Matt has spoken to Mr Fabian over the telephone, he and Pedro have to wait in Cuzco for someone from the Nexus to meet them. They wait at the temple of Corichanca, which (according to the book) is an ancient word for "Golden Courtyard." It had once been a great temple, with over four thousand priests living there, and walls lined with solid plates of gold.

When Matt and Pedro there, it is a major tourist attraction.
9. Mr Fabian meets Matt and Pedro at the temple of Coricancha.

Answer: False

Actually, Matt and Pedro have walked into a trap. While they're waiting on the steps of the temple, they notice some police cars pull up. It's only when Captain Rodriguez (the man who was waiting for Matt at the hotel previously), who evidently works for Diego Salamanda arrives that they realise it was all a trap, and Matt and Pedro only just get away.
10. After Atoc rescues Matt and Pedro and leads them through the tunnel, they eventually reach a helicopter. How many seats are there in the helicopter?

Answer: Four

As stated above, Matt and Pedro have walked into a trap, and only just escape, with help coming from some very strange places. Atoc is the one who calls out to them, and takes them through a tunnel, which seemingly isn't there. He takes them to a helicopter, with only four seats (two in front and two behind), which will presumably lead them to safety.
11. What is the name of the insects that attack Matt as he is walking through the jungle path? (Hint: their Spanish name is "puma waqachis" meaning insects who make the puma cry.)

Answer: Midges

Not a question of any real relevance, just to see how closely you read the book :). They're nasty little bugs that bite, and according to Matt, it hurts a lot.
12. What is the name of the "lost city of the Incas" the Atoc takes Matt and Pedro to?

Answer: Vilcabamba

Vilcabamba is the lost city of the Incas, which, according to Atoc, many great explorers have tried and failed to find over hundreds of years. It cannot be found and cannot be reached, because there is no path. This seems absurd to Matt, as they just came along steep and long mountain path, but when he turns around, the path has disappeared.

It is also here that Matt is finally reunited with Richard.
13. On what date is "Inti Raymi"?

Answer: June 24th

Inti Raymi is the most important date on the Inca calendar. It is the time of the summer solstice when the sun is at its furthest point south of the equator. It is then that the Incas believe the gate will open, and the Old Ones will break free. Unfortunately, dear old Diego Salamanda also knows this, and plans on not letting anyone or anything get in the way of his plans.
14. What is Professor Chambers' first name?

Answer: Joanna

Professor Chambers lives in Nazca, and who agrees to allow Matt, Richard, Pedro and Atoc to stay with her. She also happens to be an expert on the Nazca lines (which lie in the Nazca desert).
15. What famous landmark plays a huge part in the story?

Answer: The Nazca lines

The Nazca lines are world famous lines, depicting various animals (including a monkey, a condor, a hummingbird, a whale and a huge spider), in (yup, you guessed it,) Peru, in the Nazca desert. The strange things is that they can only be seen from the air, and were only discovered in 1927 when one of the first aeroplanes in Peru flew over them. Strange thing is, the ancient Peruvian people didn't have aeroplanes, so how on earth did they manage to draw such accurate pictures of various animals? There are many, many theories as to how they got there, and what they were used for, and the Nazca lines continue to be one of the modern mysteries of the world.

As it happens, the Nazca lines are the key to the release of the Old Ones.
16. How often does Professor Chambers say the earth is in EXACTLY the same position?

Answer: Every 26 000 years

Professor Chambers says to the groups that after studying the Nazca lines for the most part of her life, she began to think that there was something evil about the line, and how even though the drawings were beautiful, there was something about them that was also really scary. According to her, the Nazca lines are likely to be a giant star map, and the lines would only be in exact alignment with that certain star pattern with which they were originally made every 26 000 years, which the how often the earth is in the EXACT same position.
17. What kind of bird attacked the group while they were in the Nazca desert?

Answer: A condor

Even though they are not native to the Nazca desert, it was a bunch of condors that attacked the group whilst they were having a cup of tea and learning more about the Nazca lines. These birds clearly were under the control of the old ones.
18. Who was the traitor within the Nexus?

Answer: fabian

Mr Fabian, the one that Matt and Richard trusted the whole time, was the traitor within the Nexus. If we look back over the book, there are many clues. Firstly, the fact the Mr Fabian is the one to organise the trip to Peru. Secondly, after Matt speaks on the phone to Mr Fabian in Cuzco, telling him where he is. Mr Fabian is at Salamanda's control centre, and has been betraying Matt and the Nexus all along.
19. The gate was opened and the Old Ones came back into the world.

Answer: True

Sadly, this is true. Matt reaches Salamanda's mobile control centre, where Salamanda is killed. However, Matt does not manage to stop the gate from opening, and the Old Ones break free. However, through his power, Matt manages to weaken the Old Ones, and they have very little strength left in them. Unfortunately, neither does Matt.
20. Throughout the book, Pedro, although he is One of the Five, does not appear to have any special powers. However, we learn that he actually DOES in the final chapter. What is his special power?

Answer: He can heal someone just by being near them

Matt was injured after his encounter with the Old Ones, and things were not looking too bright for him. He was in a deep coma, with a slow heartbeat and very little brain activity. The doctor says that Matt is hanging onto life by a thread. Pedro came back from hospital the afternoon we discover his power (he broke his ankle) and the first thing he insisted on when getting back to Professor Chambers' place was seeing Matt. After Pedro places his hand on Matt's chest, Matt is awake within a couple of answers. There is a clue to this in that when Pedro lived in Poison Town, despite all the disease, no one in the street in which Pedro lived got sick at all, and were all in perfect health. Pedro is a healer.
