Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Detective Comics 27" (1939) was the first appearance of Batman. Which other Batman Family character also debuted in the same issue?

Answer: Commissioner Gordon

Like Batman, Commissioner Gordon was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. His first name, James, would be revealed later.
2. "Batman Family" was a comic book title that debuted in 1975. Its first issue featured a new story entitled, "The Invader from Hell!". It featured a team-up of which Batman related characters?

Answer: Batgirl and Robin

"Batman Family" ran for twenty issues. Though other Batman-related characters were featured, it was primarily a vehicle for Batgirl/Robin team-ups.
3. Batwoman was introduced to readers in 1956. Which of these was a primary reason for her creation by Edmond Hamilton and Sheldon Moldoff?

Answer: To dissuade young readers from possible homosexuality

Psychologist Frederic Wertham pushed the idea that reading stories of Batman and Robin living together could promote children to have homosexual fantasies. DC created Batwoman as a love interest for Batman in order to prevent such accusations. Ironically, when DC updated the Batwoman character in 2006, she was a lesbian!
4. Which of these Batman characters died first?

Answer: Alfred Pennyworth

Alfred was killed off in 1966. He was eventually resurrected in 1968. Both Kathy Kane and the Earth 2 version of Bruce Wayne were killed off in 1979. Jason Todd was killed by the Joker in 1988. Like Alfred, his character later returned from death.
5. Ace the Bat-Hound was a semi-regular supporting character from 1955 to 1964. Who was the dog's original owner?

Answer: John Wilker

John Wilker was an engraver who was kidnapped. Ace assisted Batman and Robin in his rescue. John later gave Ace to Bruce Wayne, never learning that his dog was also Bat-Hound.
6. Betty Kane, the original Bat-Girl, was related to Kathy (Batwoman) Kane. What was their relationship?

Answer: Aunt/Niece

In later reboots of the characters, they would end up being Bette Kane and Kate Kane... first cousins to each other, as well as to Bruce (Batman) Wayne.
7. Originally, the Batman Family Huntress was the daughter of the Earth-2 Batman. Who was her mother?

Answer: Earth-2 Catwoman

After the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" series eliminated Earth-2, Helena (Huntress) Wayne was rebooted as Helena (Huntress) Bertinelli, the daughter of a mafia family.
8. Each of the girls/women to officially hold the mantle of Batgirl (or Bat-Girl) has been a super-heroine under a different alias. Which group below correctly represents these five?

Answer: Flamebird, Oracle, Huntress, Orphan and Spoiler

These Batgirl (or Bat-Girl) characters, in order, are Betty (or Bette) Kane, Barbara Gordon, Helena Bertinelli, Cassandra Cain, and Stephanie Brown.
9. Only one of Batman's sidekicks has held both the mantle of Batgirl AND Robin. Who is this character?

Answer: Stephanie Brown

In rebooted chronology Helena Wayne (the Huntress of Earth-2) also held the title of Robin for a time, but she was never a Batgirl.
10. Which Robin was the first to wear leggings, rather than shorts, full time?

Answer: Tim Drake

Dick Grayson was gifted with a full legging costume in "Justice League of America" #92 in 1971. Sadly it didn't stick. It wasn't until 1989 that the silly "hot pants" were written off for good.
