Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Hera's best known characteristic?

Answer: Jealousy

Most stories describe Hera as vengeful and jealous. One of her more well known stories is when she mercilessly pursued Hercules and made completing his tasks even more difficult.
2. Who are the three maiden goddesses? (Not minor goddesses.)

Answer: Hestia, Athena and Artemis

Hestia, Athena and Artemis all took an oath to be maidens for eternity. So since they all took an oath all the other gods and goddesses must always interfere whenever someone wishes to defy this oath.
3. What plant is Aphrodite associated with besides the rose?

Answer: Myrtle

Some of the Olympians are associated with a plant; Aphrodite's is the rose and myrtle, Apollo's is the laurel plant, Dionysus' is the vine and Demeter's are the poppy, narcissus and an ear of corn.
4. Who was said to guard the golden apple tree in the Garden of the Hesperides?

Answer: Ladon the dragon

Ladon the dragon was said to guard the golden apple tree restlessly. So when Hercules came to try and get an apple, even he couldn't fight his way past the fearsome dragon, so instead he tricked the father of the Hesperides (whose identity varies from myth to myth) into giving him an apple.
5. What animal is Artemis associated with?

Answer: She isn't associated with any one animal

Since all animals are within Artemis' domain as goddess of the hunt and wildlife, she isn't associated with one in particular. Most Olympians are in fact associated with an animal though; Ares' are the dog and the vulture, Athena's is the owl, Aphrodite's is the dove, Zeus' is the eagle, Poseidon's are the fish, horse and bull (sort of strange), Hera's is the peacock and Apollo's are the wolf, deer, dolphin, crow, vulture and swan.
6. What is Nemesis the goddess of?

Answer: Vengeance

To not upset the order of the Universe she would take away some of the good fortune of those who became too rich or had an unending streak of good luck. She would also be called upon to avenge those who had been wronged.
7. Who is the mother of the first six Olympians?

Answer: Rhea

Rhea and Cronus (the Titan of time) together gave birth to the first six Olympians. The oldest was Hestia and the youngest was Zeus.
8. Which of the following is NOT one of the three eldest goddesses?

Answer: Aphrodite

Aphrodite was born just shortly after the first six Olympians. Hera is the goddess of marriage, Hestia is the goddess of the home and hearth, Demeter is the goddess of agriculture and Aphrodite is the goddess of love and beauty.
9. Which goddess was NOT in the dispute over beauty?

Answer: Artemis

Eris (strife) threw down a golden apple that was inscribed "For the fairest". Aphrodite, Hera and Athena all believed that they were the fairest. So it was decided that someone should be the judge and they picked Paris. After all the bribery, he picked, not surprisingly, Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty.
10. What is Chronos the god of?

Answer: Time

His name, which is used in Greek to mean time, is the reason why time-measuring devices are called chronometers, and a list of events in the order in which they occurred is said to be in chronological order. Another god with a similar name is Cronus, the Titan who was the father of Zeus.
