Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why was the timid ghost a failure at haunting farms?

Answer: He was afraid to say boo to a goose.

Ghosts are supposed to rattle chains with enthusiasm and shout "Boo!" at every opportunity to scare folks out of their wits, but that timid ghost was, well, afraid of his own shadow. A goose is a large waterfowl from the bird family Anatidae. These beautiful birds with an adorable waddle mate for life and are often seen on farms, where they are reared either as food, or for their eggs, or their down.

They make excellent "guard dogs" as well, and an irate goose coming at one in full flight is truly a very alarming sight. Run, you goose, run!
2. What was the name of the large cannon's son?

Answer: Baby boomer

A cannon is a large, heavy mounted gun on a carriage that is used for firing large explosives devices. These weapons were invented in China in the 12th century, and were first used there as flamethrowers. It was only later that shrapnel was added to their explosive mix.

Originally the barrels of cannon were made of bamboo, or, astonishingly so, paper, so it is presumed that each firing of a flame thrower was a one off occurrence. A baby boomer is a descriptive term applied to the children who were born in the next generation following the Second World War, and were usually, but not necessarily, the offspring of returning soldiers and their long patient wives.
3. What penalty did the chess player receive when he lost his temper during a match?

Answer: He was sent back to square one.

To be sent back to square one is to be sent back to the very beginning in any endeavour to start out all over again. Chess is a game played by two people on a square board of 8 x 8 squares. It is believed to have originated in India some time between 280-550 AD.

This is a game of great mental skill, involving the ability to plan ahead for several moves while allowing for several modes of attack from one's opponent. The object of the game is to put the opposing player's king in a position from which no escape can be made and no legal moves are left to it.

It thus is said to have been check-mated.
4. The police were sent out to find the sow's missing mate with which instruction?

Answer: Bring home the bacon

Part of the many jobs allocated to our long-suffering police force is locating missing persons. To bring home the bacon is a term that usually means bringing home enough money to keep the family fed and together. This old expression is thought to have dated back to 1104 when the local prior was so impressed by the devotion of a long married couple to one another that he awarded them with a side of bacon. How romantic.
5. What did the criminal hen lay?

Answer: A bad egg

A bad egg is a term that refers to someone who is always doing the wrong thing, who cannot be relied upon in any circumstances, and who usually ends up in trouble with the law. A hen in this puniom refers to a domesticated chicken whose daily job it is to produce an egg for the family that owns her. Chickens always remind me of Rachel weeping for her children, as they're seldom allowed to hatch their offspring and know the joys of motherhood.
6. When endorsing the politician's comments at a meeting, what did the bald man cry out?

Answer: Hair hair

Thanks to Paulmallon of Team Dream Weavers for the suggestion for this puniom. "Hear, hear" is a term expressing approval of some remark made by another person. It expresses hearty endorsement. You'll often hear it during parliamentary debates when one side or the other either cries out same to support the speech of a member of their party - or "Shame, shame" in response to a comment made by the opposition. That's when they're not nodding off from boredom, of course.
7. How did the horse usually call his long-suffering mare to his side?

Answer: Hay you!

"Hey you" is the term sometimes used when one person is trying to get the attention of another, or merely saying a kind of informal hello. Hay is a dried grass that has been stored away to feed animals in times of winter or other food shortages. You'll often see it on farms these days in large rolls which have been scattered around a paddock for cattle or other animals to lazily munch upon when they're feeling hungry.
8. What did the tree with a migraine ask for?

Answer: An aspen

This puniom is based on the word "aspirin", a painkilling tablet often used to ease the pain of headaches or other bodily aches. Aspens are a tree species found under the populous genus. They are native to the cooler regions in the northern hemisphere. Deciduous in make up, the leaves of this tree turn lovely shades of yellow and orange in winter before dropping off to scatter their beautiful carpets of colour on the ground.

Their wood is used to make matches, paper, packing materials, and sometimes slats for roofing
9. How were the boxer's facial injuries described by the press?

Answer: About face

"About face" is an drill command during which soldiers turn around to face the direction from which they have just come. A boxing match is often described as a bout. So if a pugilist has a bout face, he's had a pretty rough time of it all up and is looking a bit banged up around the edges.
10. In what way did the gambler teach the newcomer to play?

Answer: An aid and abet manner

To aid and abet anyone is to help them in some way to carry out a usually criminal activity. During many games that involve gambling, a bet (abet) is usually made on the likely outcome. If you win, you collect a lot more than you bet, but if you lose, then let that be a lesson to you, young man or lady, to stop wasting your money in such a foolish way.

The odds are always weighed against that win. In other words, a horse that is listed as a ten to one chance of winning, has actually nine out of ten chances of losing.
