Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Released in 2004, the novel "Splinter Cell" stems from the video game series of the same name created by Tom Clancy. Although the series was created by Clancy, Raymond Benson actually wrote the novel under a pseudonym. What pseudonym did Benson write "Splinter Cell" under?

Answer: David Michaels

Raymond Benson has also written the novels for the James Bond movies "Tomorrow Never Dies", "The World is Not Enough", and "Die Another Day". Tom Clancy is well-known for having other authors "write" his stories as is the case with both of his series "Net Force" and "Power Plays".
2. What top secret sector of the United States government does Sam Fisher and all other Splinter Cells work for?

Answer: Third Echelon

In the novel, Third Echelon is a subagency within the National Security Agency (NSA). Third Echelon field operatives are known as Splinter Cells and if they are captured the U.S. government will deny any knowledge of their existence.
3. Where is Sam Fisher at the beginning of the novel "Splinter Cell"?

Answer: Ventilation shaft of the Tropical Casino in Macau.

The novel is written in the first person and Sam describes being in the ventilation shaft as "It's like being in a state of nonexistence. A vacuum. Darkness and light at the same time, and no sense of gravity". Sam's top secret missions necessitate staying in clandestine and more often than not uncomfortable places.
4. What is the only problem that Sam Fisher has with his Objective Force Warrior Uniform?

Answer: It is too tight and thus makes him look like a superhero.

Sam's uniform has a mechanism that enables him to adjust the temperature; it is made of materials that are flexible, it contains Kevlar for "stopping" bullets, and its photosensitivity alerts Sam that a laser is being aimed at him.
5. What type of fighting style does Sam Fisher use exclusively for hand-to-hand combat?

Answer: Krav Maga

Krav Maga is an Israeli martial arts form and its name means "contact combat". Sam describes the discipline as being a combination of karate, judo, kung fu, and other down-and-dirty measures. Krav Maga is not a competitive fighting style because its aim is to inflict maximum damage by whatever means possible and with whatever object available.
6. Of the following, who was not one of the Splinter Cells that were killed in this story?

Answer: Irving Lambert

The three Splinter Cells previously mentioned were all murdered by The Shop after their identity as secret agents had been discovered. Irving Lambert is the Director of Operations of Third Echelon and he gives Sam Fisher his mission objectives.
7. How many languages does Sam Fisher speak?

Answer: 7

Sam's various missions necessitate the knowledge of the local culture, history, and language of the places he is sent. In the current story, he has to speak Arabic at various times.
8. In addition to trying to uncover the secrets and players behind The Shop, Sam Fisher has some personal business that he must deal with. His daughter, Sarah Burns, is kidnapped and held as a hostage. What is the name of the individual who kidnaps Sarah?

Answer: Eli Horowitz

Eli Horowitz kidnaps Sarah at a club in Jerusalem after he spikes her drink with a sedative. Originally, Sarah had thought that she and Eli were in love and planned on marrying him one day.
9. Throughout much of the story, Sam Fisher is stationed in various parts of the Middle East and western Asia. In one city, he comments that this city is much windier than Chicago (which is nicknamed the "windy city"). Which city is Sam referring to, the largest city in the Caucasus?

Answer: Baku, Azerbaijan

In Baku, Sam finds one of The Shop's warehouses. The warehouse, full of powerful weapons and a helicopter landing area, was disguised as a diaper factory. The city of Baku itself has a population near 2,000,000 and its name comes from the Persian meaning "city of winds".
10. What is the name of the major terrorist organization, headed by Nasir Tarighian, that is buying much of the weapons sold by The Shop?

Answer: The Shadows

The leader of The Shadows, Nasir Tarighian, was believed by many to have been killed during the Iran-Iraq War. Living under the name Namik Basaran, Tarighian formed Akdabar Industries and a charity group named Tirma to help fight terrorism around the world. Of course these organizations were farces and Tarighian's main aim was to inflict punishment on the Western World through The Shadows.
11. What was the name of the powerful missile-launching weapon that Nasir Tarighian attempted to use at the end of the story?

Answer: Babylon Phoenix

The Babylon Phoenix was a weapon powerful enough to destroy an entire city. Tarighian, from his hideout on the island of Cyprus, wanted to use the Babylon Phoenix to show the world that The Shadows were a major threat, to exact revenge on those that had caused the death of his family, and to eliminate American interference in the Middle East.
12. What was the original target city for the missile-launching weapon at the end of the story?

Answer: Baghdad, Iraq

Nasir Tarighian thought that destroying Baghdad would put an end to American involvement in the Middle East and that it would promote Muslim rule in the country. After the murder of Tarighian, the Phoenix was calibrated to target Jerusalem, but the missile was shot down by an American fighter jet shortly after its launch.
13. Who murdered Nasir Tarighian shortly before the weapon was to launch at its original target city?

Answer: Professor Albert Mertens

Mertens killed Tarighian because all of the other leading members of The Shadows felt that the target city should not be Baghdad, a primarily Muslim city.
14. The other main villain in the novel was Andrei Zdrok, the leader of The Shop. Of the following, which is NOT true regarding Andrei Zdrok in this story?

Answer: He is a master in telepathy.

Andrei Zdrok, the President of the Swiss-Russian International Mercantile Banks of Geneva and Baku, is the man behind The Shop's ruthless operations designed to maximize its cash inflows and eliminate Splinter Cells. Zdrok escaped when he noticed that the police were entering one of his banks.
15. What is the name of the Israeli military group that helps Sam Fisher rescue his daughter from an abandoned warehouse near Jerusalem?

Answer: Shin Bet

The Shin Bet, led by Captain Weiss, assist Sam Fisher in taking down the Russians Yuri and Vlad and apprehending Eli Horowitz. In actuality, the Shin Bet, or Shabak as it is known in Hebrew, is a group of 5,000 soldiers who comprise the General Security Service of Israel.
