Answer: Sabotage by Muslim fanatics at a massive oilfield.

Fresh batteries can dramatically increase a diesel-electric sub's performance.
6. Mikhail Sergetov is a candidate member of the Politburo. What is his area of expertise?

Answer: Energy

Sergetov had to try to resolve the aforementioned oil shortage.
7. U.S. Navy Commander Ed Morris is the skipper of a Knox class frigate. What is his ship's name?

9. What strategically brilliant target is captured by a Soviet airborne battalion hidden in a freighter disguised as an American vessel?

Answer: Keflavik, Iceland

With the remainder of the airborne division flown into Iceland, the Soviets have severed the Greenland, Iceland, UK line of defense. Intact, this line would have been able to detect and prosecute Soviet submarines and long range naval aircraft attempting to attack Atlantic convoys, critical to the introduction and resupply of NATO forces in Europe. Now the Soviets can use Iceland as a forward defense base against NATO air attacks.
10. Lieutenant Mike Edwards escapes the attack by the Soviet airborne forces. He is a meteorologist in which branch of the US military?

Answer: Air Force

Edwards avoids capture and has with him a Marine sergeant and two privates. The Marines are not very keen at following the orders of a "wing wiper". He intends to report the collapse of Iceland's defense as soon as he can, via satellite phone.
11. US Navy reservist Bob Toland is put on active duty as an intelligence officer and is aboard the USS Nimitz. She is badly damaged by a Soviet naval air assault. Due to heavy casualties, what does Bob Toland end up doing?

Answer: Conning the ship

Toland had put a destroyer on a sandbar early in his career, now he is steering a damaged super carrier after a heavy attack.

Answer: A woman was being raped.

A young woman named Vigdis was being raped, and Edwards took action. He was dating a girl in college who was raped and murdered. He felt powerless then, but this time the attackers would pay. He and the marines kill or capture all five Russians involved. Behind enemy lines and with no way to deal with prisoners who were committing crimes, the captured Russians are executed.
13. USS Chicago is ordered to engage a Soviet invasion fleet, specifically, the heavy warships escorting it. After hours of approach and evading detection, Chicago is ready to launch its attack against the battle cruiser "Kirov". Another sub gets in an attack first. Who was it?

Answer: HNoMS Kobben (Norway)

Captain Bjorn Johannsen attacked with his small, coastal sub and put four mark 37 torpedoes into Kirov, sinking her quickly. Under heavy attack by Kirov's escorts, Kobben was damaged and almost out of battery power when Chicago loosed three harpoon missiles before being forced into evasive action.

These missiles scored hits against the escorts hunting Kobben, taking the heat off her. Kobben was able to escape. This event was recounted days later in a bar in Faslane, Scotland. Johannsen, drinking heavily in celebration, tells his story over and over. McCafferty is angry that Johannsen hits "his" target.

When Johannsen figures out who McCafferty is, he hugs McCafferty. "Hero!...You save my men!...You save my ship!"
14. USS Pharris escorts a convoy to the UK. Just before returning to the US for another convoy escort, a Red Navy "Victor" class sub scores a torpedo hit against Pharris. What is the damage?

Answer: Her bow is nearly severed, it folds back upon the hull.

Pharris remains afloat and is towed to harbor aft first by a fleet tug. She is done for the war.

Answer: Takes personal command of a tank division after its commander dies.

The 20th Guards Tank division's commanding general is KIA. The division's deputy commander is a new colonel. Alekseyev takes command and effectively leads them until a replacement is found.
18. How does NATO intend to neutralize the Russian Naval Air Bases on the Kola Peninsula?

Answer: Sub launched cruise missiles timed to arrive just after a returning strike lands.

The timing for this is critical. The intention is to catch bombers still in the runway, not in shelters. Cluster munitions would make short work of exposed jets, especially being refueled and/or re-armed.
19. Another frigate needs a skipper due to illness. After losing the USS Pharris, Morris takes command of what ship?

Answer: USS Reuben James

The Reuben James is a Perry class frigate. She also made an appearance in the movie "The Hunt for Red October". She did not appear in that book.
