Van McCoy and the Soul City Symphony recorded "The Hustle." McCoy started in a street corner singing group that he formed with his brother and some friends, called The Starlighters. He had a prolific career of songwriting but died very young, at 39, of a heart attack.

Barry was born in Texas and raised in Los Angeles. After serving his four month jail term, Barry turned from gang life to music. In later life, he declined a voice role in South Park; he was a devout Christian and did not feel comfortable with the show's irreverence. Barry died in 2003, from renal failure, at the age of 58.
