The United States Naval Academy was founded in Annapolis in 1845. Navy's sports teams are nicknamed Midshipmen and are members of different conferences depending on the sport involved. The gridiron team was traditionally independent until joining the American Athletic Conference in 2015. Both men's and women's basketball teams compete in the Patriot League.

Answer: Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps was born in Baltimore in 1985 and trained at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club. Following the 2016 Rio Olympics, he held the record for most Olympic medals of any color (28) and most gold medals (23). At Beijing, in 2008, he won eight golds to break Mark Spitz's single games record of seven set in 1972.

After struggling on the field in their first few seasons in Baltimore, the Ravens won the AFC Central Division in 2000. Victories over Denver, Tennessee and Oakland in the play-offs saw them face up to the Giants in Super Bowl XXXV in Tampa. Ray Lewis made three solo tackles and had two assists and four blocked passes as the Ravens won 34-7.

The race was first held in 1873 when it was won by a horse called Survivor.

The Baltimore Orioles relocated to Maryland in time for the 1954 season from St Louis, where they were known as the Browns. Title number two followed in 1970, when the Reds were defeated in five games.

The Orioles third crown was won in 1983 when, after dropping the first game to the Phillies, they won four straight games.

The Baltimore Bullets relocated to Maryland from Chicago in 1963, where they had been known as the Zephyrs. The drafting of Wes Unseld in the 1968 NBA draft saw the team's fortunes improve, and they went all the way to the finals in 1971. There, they came up against a Bucks team that included Lew Alcindor and Oscar Robertson in their line-up, and it was the team from Wisconsin who prevailed in four straight games.

The Bullets relocated to Washington D.C. in 1973 and changed their nickname to Wizards in 1997.

Dominique Dawes is a former gymnast who was born in Silver Spring in 1976. She made her Olympic debut in Barcelona in 1992, where she won bronze in the team event. In 1996, in Atlanta, she won bronze in the floor event, and gold in the team event. A further team bronze followed in Sydney in 2000.

After retirement, she attended the University of Maryland and followed a varied career path, including acting and modelling.
