1. The Portland Thorns are a team in which sport?

Answer: Soccer

The Portland Thorns are a soccer team who began playing in the newly-formed National Women's Soccer League in 2013. Playing their home games at Providence Park, they were immediately successful, winning the league's first ever championship with victory over Western New York Flash in the final. A second title followed in 2017 when North Carolina Courage were their victims in the final.
2. Margaret Osborne duPont, from the Oregon city of Joseph, was a successful tennis player in the 1940s/50s. Which was the only Grand Slam singles title that she didn't win during her career?

Answer: Australian Championships

Margaret Osborne was born in Joseph in 1918. She achieved her greatest success in the years immediately after World War 2, winning six Grand Slam singles titles (two French, one Wimbledon and three US). She never played in the Australian Championships because her husband, William duPont, didn't want her to travel there!
3. The Portland Trail Blazers won their only NBA crown of the 20th century in 1977 with victory over which team in the finals?

Answer: Philadelphia 76ers

The Trail Blazers are a basketball team who began play as an NBA expansion team in 1970. They failed to reach the play-offs in any of their first six seasons, but in the seventh, 1976-77, they won the lot. The Chicago Bulls, Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers were all defeated on the way to a finals meeting with the 76ers.

The Blazers recovered from a 0-2 deficit to win four straight games and lift the title.
4. Steve Prefontaine, from Coos Bay, was a competitor in which sport?

Answer: Athletics

5. The Oregon State Beavers compete in college sports in the Pac-12 Conference. Which city would you need to visit to watch them play home games in various sports?

Answer: Corvallis

Oregon State University was founded in Corvallis in 1868. The Beavers began play in the Pacific Coast Conference (forerunner of the Pac-12) in 1916. Their baseball team won the College World Series three times between 2006 and 2018.
6. Dicky Fosbury, from Portland, found fame at the 1968 Summer Olympics in which athletics event?

7. The Portland Timbers are a Major League Soccer team who won the 2015 MLS Cup with victory over which team in the final?

Answer: Columbus Crew

The Portland Timbers are an MLS expansion team who began play in 2011. Sharing their name with a previous NASL team based in the city, they play home games at Providence Park. In 2015, they finished third in the Western Conference, qualifying them for the play-offs. Victories over Sporting Kansas City, Vancouver Whitecaps and FC Dallas saw them through to a title match against Columbus Crew.

The game was played in Columbus, but it was the visiting Timbers who prevailed 2-1.
8. The Portland Breakers were a short-lived American football franchise which were members of which league?

Answer: United States Football League

The Breakers played home games in three different cities during their short lifetime. They started off as the Boston Breakers in 1983, moved to New Orleans in 1984 and then to Portland in 1985. Their tenure in Oregon wasn't a successful one - their sole season at Civic Stadium ended with a 6-12 record, and the USFL folded shortly afterwards.
9. Scott Brosius, from Hillsboro, is a baseball player who won three World Series titles with which team?

Answer: New York Yankees

Scott Brosius was born in Hillsboro in 1963 and grew up in nearby Milwaukie. He was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in 1987 and remained with that organisation until 1997, when he moved to the Yankees. Playing third base, he was part of the Bronx Bombers line-up which won three straight World Series crowns between 1998 and 2000.

They lost the 2001 Series to Arizona and Brosius retired shortly afterwards.
10. The University of Oregon Ducks are members of the Pac-12 Conference and have won national titles in a number of sports. Their women's teams were particularly dominant in which sport in the early 21st century, winning seven national crowns between 2010 and 2017?

Answer: Indoor Track & Field

The University of Oregon was founded in Eugene in 1876, and the Ducks have been members of the Pac-12 and its predecessors since 1915. Their track and field teams have had a long history of success through the decades, with Eugene being nicknamed "Track Town" by sports fans. Vin Lananna was appointed head coach of both men's and women's track teams in 2005, and, under him and his successor Robert Johnson, who took over in 2012, both indoor and outdoor squads won multiple national titles.
