Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (1984) NES: This was the first game Mario made a cameo appearance in. He played the umpire of an early tennis game. What was the name of the tennis game?

Answer: Tennis

Little is to be said about this cameo appearance or the game for that matter. Mario was the umpire, sitting up high in a chair yelling out different words depending on the play. Apart from Mario's role as an umpire, the game was just a regular tennis game.
2. (1984) NES: "Pinball" was a decent Pinball simulator and had the added bonus of a mini game starring none other than everyone's favorite plumber, Mario. How did one unlock this mini game?

Answer: Hit the ball into the bonus hole to take part in a bonus game

After hitting the ball into the bonus hole, a mini-pinball game starring Mario is unlocked. By moving Mario's paddle back and forth, the main objective is to take out the blocks under Pauline's feet to free her. Pauline is later replaced by Princess Peach.
3. (1987) NES: Mario made a cameo appearance in a boxing game called "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out". What role did Mario have in his cameo appearance?

Answer: Referee

Mario appeared in the original "Punch-Out" as a member of the audience but he was not an audience member in "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out". His role was a referee and he mainly just said go, counted up to ten when someone was knocked down, and either said K.O. (Knockout) or T.K.O. (Technical Knockout).
4. (1989) NES: Mario made an insignificant cameo appearance in a sports game called "Baseball". What kind of a cameo did Mario have?

Answer: Name of the pitcher for two teams was Mario and Luigi

The pitcher for the Bears is called Mario, and the pitcher for the Eagles is called Luigi. Neither player actually resembles the Mario brothers in-game. Regardless, any mention of the characters name counts as a cameo, plus Mario appeared on the box art of "Baseball". He was a pitcher in the artwork, as well.
5. (1989) Mario made a cameo appearance in the NES release of "Tetris".

Answer: True

Complete Mode B on Speed 9, Height 5 to get a scene containing a load of Nintendo characters dancing and playing music. Among them are Mario, Luigi, Peach and Bowser.
6. (1990) Game Boy: "Qix" featured cameo appearances from both Mario and Luigi. By earning certain scores in certain speeds, the player was treated to a cameo of either Mario or Luigi. Which of the following is not an actual cameo type in "Qix"?

Answer: Russian Mario

If you reached a certain high score without losing you were treated to Mario dressed up as a native of Mexico or Africa. Also, a player could unlock a few minor cameos called Team Mario or Team Luigi.
7. (1990) In "F1-Race", for the Game Boy, between each race you are greeted by a Nintendo character. Among them are Mario, Toad, Luigi, and Peach.

Answer: True

All of the Mario characters appear separately in between races, but the ending sequence features all of the above characters and Bowser, who wasn't in the original line-up of characters. It remained a decent F1-Racing Sim, especially for the Game Boy, and it featured appearances by Nintendo's poster characters: Mario, Toad, Luigi, and Peach.
8. (1991) SNES: "Sim City" had a multitude of cameos from both Mario and Bowser. Which of the following is a cameo style Mario makes in the game?

Answer: There is a Mario statue

The Mario statue is unlocked when the number of citizens in your city reaches 500,000. Place it and a few notes of the Mario theme will play, followed by a cheer. Mario's face appears in a place called Marioland, not Luigi-land. Bowser makes cameos but this quiz is only related to those of Mario.
9. (1991) SNES: "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past". In which of the following villages can you see several portraits of Mario hanging on the walls?

Answer: Kakariko Village

The pictures of Mario are simply head shots of Mario. If the player pulls some of them, they can earn some rupees. In the Turtle Rock dungeon you will battle Chain Chomps from the "Super Mario" series.
10. (1992) SNES: In "Super Play Action Football", to decide which team has the ball first a coin is tossed. The heads icon is Mario's raccoon tail from "Super Mario Brothers 3", and tails is Mario's face.

Answer: False

The raccoon tail is tails, and Mario's face is heads. Apart from this minor cameo, the rest of the game is just straight football, free of Mario.
