Who was the first German circumnavigator and the first person to circumnavigate the earth twice?

Hans von Aachen

One of the four survivors was Hans von Aachen, who was also one of the 18 survivors of Magellan's expedition, making him the first to circumnavigate the world twice.

Nobody seems to know how he was really called. "Hans von Aachen" is just a nickname meaning "John from Aachen" but not a proper name.

In the Spanish crew list of Magellan's Victoria he appeared as "Maestre Anes, son of Juan Pahulo and Sofia". He soon was called "Juan Alemán de Aquisgran". As the voyage started in 1519, Hans worked as a cannoneer on board. On Sep 22 1522, he returned to Spain as one of only 18 survivors under Juan Sebastián Elcano who had assumed the command after Magellan's death.

It was again under Elcano when Hans joined the Loaisa expedition in 1525. This time he returned as one of only four survivors. By then, he was the only one to have circumnavigated the earth for a second time.

In 1542, he set sail for the last time with the Villalobos expedition - a journey from which he never returned.
