Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What name was given to minor planet 943, discovered in 1920 by Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth?

Answer: Begonia

Reinmuth discovered this minor planet, along with 394 others, from Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory. He also discovered two near earth objects, (1862 Apollo and 69230 Hermes) as well as almost a dozen trojan asteroids of Jupiter.

There are over 1,800 different species of Begonia, mainly found in tropical climes and they are edible in small amounts. They possess a slightly bitter taste due to the high quantity of oxalic acid they contain and it is this which makes them toxic when consumed in large quantities.
2. What was the title of Shinedown's fourth album, follow up to 2008's "The Sound Of Madness"?

Answer: Amaryllis

"The Sound Of Madness" yielded four Billboard Hot 100 hits in USA and the album itself reached number eight on the Billboard 200 but "Amaryllis" (2012) gave the band just one Billboard Hot 100 hit, when "Bully" just scraped in at number 94 even though the album itself was more successful, hitting number four on the Billboard 200 as well as going top 20 in UK and Canada.

Onions, leeks and garlic are all part of the amaryllis family of plants.
3. Which Royal Navy corvette warship rescued 31 survivors after SS Silma was sunk by a German U-boat in 1940 and was renamed USS Courage when she was transferred to the US Navy in 1942?

Answer: HMS Heartsease

HMS Heartsease was a flower class corvette alongside other like named ships such as HMS Bluebell, HMS Honeysuckle and HMS Camellia. Her original name was to have been HMS Pansy, but this was changed prior to commissioning due to "pansy" being UK slang for an effeminate man and the crew's displeasure at having to wear caps with Pansy emblazoned on them.

Heartsease is also known as Viola tricolor and Johnny Jump Up as well as Love-In-Idleness, by which name it is mentioned several times in the works of Shakespeare, notably in "The Taming Of The Shrew".
4. Which model of Triumph car, made between 1949 and 1953 is the subject of John Brack's painting, "The Car"? Unfortunately it never sold well, as pilgrims didn't rush to buy it.

Answer: Mayflower

The Mayflower was Triumph's attempt to crack the American market as they believed the razor edge styling, similar to that of a Rolls-Royce or Bentley but on a smaller car, would woo the American auto buyer. This proved not to be the case as the car completely failed to hit any sales targets.

The Mayflower is a ground level spreading shrub found across most of North America, and is used by many native peoples in herbal medicines.
5. Which cross-legged sitting asana in yoga is also known as padmasana?

Answer: Lotus Position

The lotus position is one of the most ancient yoga positions and was among the first to be named. It is said to aid breathing and promote physical stability and resemble a lotus, however if you ever see me attempt it the resemblance is closer to a locust than a lotus, and an arthritic locust at that.

The lotus flower is an aquatic flower that is revered in Hinduism, symbolising purity and divine beauty.
6. Which rock band have had lead guitarists called Slash and Buckethead?

Answer: Guns N' Roses

Slash was the original guitarist in the band and was with them for their first five albums from "Appetite For Destruction" in 1987 through to "The Spaghetti Incident" in 1993. Buckethead was with the band between 2000 and 2004, when there was almost a revolving door policy for musicians, and appears on the "Chinese Democracy" album which was released in 2008.

The rose is closely associated with Greek goddess Aphrodite, the goddess of love, giving rise to the flower's potency as a symbol of undying love.
7. Which UK hotel chain was launched in 1965 by Scottish & Newcastle Brewery and sponsored Leeds United between 1993 and 1996?

Answer: Thistle

Leeds were flying high at the time, having been crowned English champions in 1992 and after a season with Admiral Sportswear as their shirt sponsors, signed a deal with Thistle who had hotels throughout UK at the time.

Answer: Dr. Daffodil

Answer: Stocks
