A "Champion Tree" is the exceptional specimen of its species. Some factors that make a champion tree include age, size and rarity or historical aspects.

In the United States, the variables used to calculate champion points are the tree's height, trunk circumference and branch spread. The formula is:

Points = Height in feet + Trunk circumference in inches + 1/4 average branch spread in feet
