António Egas Moniz (1874-1955) received a half-share of the 1949 Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine. The Portuguese doctor's work concerned the use of lobotomy operations to assist people with severe mental illness. His Nobel citation read:
"for his discovery of the therapeutic value of leucotomy in certain psychoses."
