In 1901 the Nobel Foundation awarded the Noble Prize for the first time. The first people to be honored were: Wilhelm Röntgen in Physics, Jacobus H. van't Hoff in Chemistry, Emil A. von Behring in Physiology or Medicine, Sully Prudhomme in Literature, and Henry Durant and Frédéric Passy won the Peace Prize (jointly).

The Indian Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was a poet, musician and artist and had the privilege of being the first non-European person to win the Nobel Prize (in any category). In 1913 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature. His works, essays, songs are about politics and personal affairs.

He is still remembered today because his compositions were chosen as national anthems for India and Bangladesh. The Sri Lanka anthem was also inspired by his works.

Antonio Egas Moniz was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1949 for his work in the field of neurology. He developed the angiography that allowed the first visualization of the brain internally.
The interesting thing is that his first passion was politics. During the First World War he was Portugal's ambassador to Spain; he was also the Minister of External Affairs, having represented Portugal at the Versailles Peace Conference in 1919. Only in 1926, when he was 51 years old, did he decide to dedicate himself entirely to medicine.

In 1903, Albert Einstein married Mileva Marić and they had three children. In 1918, Einstein presented to Mileva a divorce agreement where he offered a substancial annual pension for her and for the children. The agreement also stated that "IF" the divorce took place and "IF" he received the Nobel Prize, all the money would go directly to her and their children.

They divorced in 1919 and he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921.

The English biochemist Frederic Sanger (1918-2013) received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1958 and 1980 and was the first scientist to receive the Chemistry award twice.
The American John Baden (1908-1991) was the first person to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics twice, in 1956 and 1972.
Linus Pauling (1901-1994) an American chemist, biochemist, engineer, peace activist received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962.
The Polish, naturalized French, scientist Marie Curie (1867-1934) received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911. She was the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize and until 2019 the only woman to receive two Nobel Prizes.

Three Nobel Peace Prize laureates were arrested at the time of the award. Before Lou Xiaobo, the German Carl von Ossietzky, a journalist, writer and pacifist in 1936, knew about his award in prison and Aung San Suu Kyi, a Burmese diplomat and politician received in 1991 the Nobel Peace Prize when she was under house arrest.

It must be remembered that Hitler considered the award to Ossietzky an offensive act and issued a decree forbidding any German to accept any Nobel Prize.

Before 1974, the Nobel Prize has been award twice posthumously: Dag Hammarskjöld and Erik Axel Karlfeldt. From 1974 the Statute of the Nobel Foundation established that a Prize cannot be award posthumously unless the death had occurred after the announcement of the prize.
8. Two laureates refused to receive the Nobel Prize. Who were they?

Answer: Jean Paul Sartre and Le Duc Tho

Until 2019 only two people refused the Nobel Prize. The first was the writer and philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre. He declined the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1964. On this occasion he declared that he had always refused official distinctions for fearing that the prize would have impact on his writing.

The second person to decline the prize was the revolutionary Le Duc Tho, awarded in 1973 Nobel Peace Prize together with Henry Kissinger for his effort to achieve peace in Vietnam. Le Duc Tho declared that he was prevented from receiving the award because the situation in Vietnam was still very bad.

At the Nobel Prize Award Ceremonies the Nobel Laureates receive three things: a diploma, a medal and a document confirming the Nobel Prize amount. Each Nobel diploma is a unique work of art, created by artists and calligraphers. The Nobel Medals are handmade in 18 carat recycled gold.
