Did they tell the neighbours?
Chicago Pile 1 was the world's first nuclear reactor, built in 1942 by Nobel Prize winner Enrico Fermi. The reactor was built underneath the University of Chicago's Stagg Field football stadium.

This and other early nuclear reactors were designed by the Metallurgical Laboratory (Manhattan Project), the predecessor of Argonne National laboratory. The latter was founded by Enrico Fermi and others from the Manhattan Group.
