Icarus is the most distant star seen at 14 billion LY away! It is only possible to see it because it is a blue supergiant and it is being magnified by the gravitational effects of a cluster galaxy 5 billion LY from Earth. This gravitational lens is thought to magnify the star by close to 2000 times its normal size. Discovering astronomer Patrick Kelly wanted to name the star Warhol for his 15 minutes of fame, but his team wanted to name it Icarus after the Greek legend.
