How wealthy was John Sutter by 1852 after gold was discovered on his land 4 years earlier?

Not wealthy at all! Just four years after the gold discovery, Sutter found himself bankrupt.

John Sutter (1808-1880) was born in Europe. Later as an American citizen he established what eventually became Sutter's Mill on the Sacramento River. The discovery of gold there in 1848 led to the California Gold Rush. Unfortunately for John Sutter his business ventures failed during this time.
