President Ronald Reagan granted Joe Louis a special waiver for burial at Arlington National Cemetery in recognition of his World War II service and his cultural impact. Louis, who enlisted in 1942, boosted troop morale through exhibition boxing matches. Although he never saw combat, his contributions made him a national hero and he was given full military honours at his burial in 1981.
