Probably the biggest solid gold object in existence is the innermost of three coffins of the Egyptian King Tutankhamen, which weighs 2,447 pounds (more than a ton).

At one time the statue was covered in plaster, and the golden Buddha inside was forgotten. However, the five-ton statue's full glory was rediscovered whilst being moved, when it was dropped and the plaster cracked.
