Answer: The Martian

"The Martian" is the story of how Mark Watney (Matt Damon) came to be stranded alone on Mars. When his crew gets caught in a massive sandstorm on Mars and they are trying to make their way back to the ship, Watney gets hit with flying debris. Assuming that he wouldn't be able to survive the blow, they make their escape, leaving Watney behind. For much of the film, Watney's interactions were with himself and a video camera. As is the case with many other survival/castaway films, Watney first struggles with the basic needs of life. Once he accomplishes that, he sets out to figure out how to reestablish contact with Earth. On hearing of his survival, even though they were more than halfway back to Earth, Watney's crew voted to return to rescue him. They finally arrived at a solution to get him from the surface of Mars back to the ship that would be waiting in orbit.

In this scene, the crew realizes that they are traveling much too fast and are going to be too far away to intercept him. Mark says this to the ship in orbit.

Answer: Men in Black 3

Possibly due to lackluster reviews for its 2002 predecessor, it took ten years for this third entry to materialize. The story requires Will Smith's Agent J to travel back in time to save a younger Agent K (Brolin) from a vengeful alien creature.

Answer: Dark of the Moon

Based on the Hasbro action figures, the "Transformers" series met with much success. Released in June of 2011, the third film "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" was the second highest grossing film of 2011 with $1.125 billion in sales ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2" took the top spot).

This film received mixed reviews by the critics due to its numerous plot twists. Initially slated to be released in 2009, the opening was delayed to 2010 as a result of financial problems. Despite some setbacks this movie became Scorsese's best grossing film worldwide to date.

Answer: La La Land

"La La Land" is a musical film set in Los Angeles (or La La Land, as some people refer to it). It follows the stories of Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), two people who meet, fall in love, then go their separate ways. Mia is an aspiring actress and playwright who is on the never-ending treadmill of Hollywood auditions and callbacks. Sebastian is a jazz pianist trying to preserve the art form before it gets lost forever. He is also upset that his favorite jazz club has been turned into a Samba-Tapas restaurant. The film takes a few twists and turns and even has kind of an alternate universe segment. If you want the stereotypical Hollywood ending, don't look for it here.

Answer: Stellan Skarsgard

The film starts in the style of a typical revenge movie. Skarsgard's character Nils, the local snow ploughman, is told that his son has died from a heroin overdose. However, Nils does not believe his son was a drug addict and so takes matters into his own hands. Soon after this, the plot stays with the theme of vengeance, but steers away from cliche and becomes a bit of a comedy (a good one too!). Nils remains stoic throughout the bloodshed, even when caught in the crossfire between two rival gangs. The real standout performance, however, comes from Greven (played by Pal Sverre Hagen). Greven is the boss of the gang responsible for Nils' son's murder, but his status as ruthless boss head is brilliantly juxtaposed with his side business of running a cupcake shop. The rather thin plot is just a vehicle for the perfect portrayal of these ludicrous and funny characters.

Answer: A novel

This mash-up turned out to be more successful with the critics than one might assume from the odd premise, which features the 16th U.S. president battling the title creatures of the night.

Answer: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Since a child, Abraham Lincoln has known about the existence of vampires as his mother was killed by one. This traumatic scene set a vengeful Abe on the tracks of vampires seeking to exterminate them. With the help of Henry, himself a vampire, Abe is able to execute his plan.

Answer: Calvary

"Calvary" is a beautifully acted piece set in an equally beautiful part of coastal Ireland. Although Gleeson's character is good natured, his initially amicable rapport with the people of the community quickly sours. Some mock his faith and dismiss his comforting words as mumbo jumbo. Some dislike what they see as the preachy and judgemental nature of him and (more widely) the church. And some hold him accountable for the evils of the church, most notably the sexual abuse of children. For this last reason, the priest is told at the start of the film by a man in the confessional that he is going to kill him as retribution, despite the fact that he is personally innocent. The rather bleak view of religion's role in modern society is not total, however. There are some people in the film who are provided comfort by Gleeson and the church, such as the woman who lost her husband. Even the materialistic misanthrope played by Dylan Moran has somewhat of a revelation near the end of the film.

The offbeat comedy by "Family Guy" creator Seth McFarlane was a top-grosser during the 2012 year. It tells the story of a boy who wishes his stuffed bear would come to life and be his friend, and takes things further by showing how that complicates his adult life.

"The Avengers", originally a Marvel comic, is adapted into a movie. It unites Iron Man, the Black Widow, Hawkeye, Captain America, Hulk and Thor, who work under S.H.I.E.L.D with Nick Fury. Loki has stolen the Tesseract for the Chitauri and has opened a portal to enter Earth. The Tesseract is a powerful source of energy. Stealing it pushes the Avengers to track and stop Loki.

Puss in Boots found his way out of the "Shrek" films and received his own, simply called "Puss in Boots" in October 2011. Antonio Banderas voices the lovable cat, and Salma Hayek voices his love interest.

The movie is about a 12 year old (Jaden Smith) who, with his mother, relocates from Detroit to Beijing. The boy gets bullied and beaten after developing a crush on a girl at school. A kung fu expert (Jackie Chan) comes to the rescue, teaches the boy to fight. He then subsequently faces his tormentor in a tournament.
In addition to his acting and martial arts abilities, Chan is a director, producer, screenwriter, action choreographer and singer. Jackie Chan also founded The Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation, which provides help to the youth back in his native Hong Kong.

Answer: Bohemian Rhapsody

"Bohemian Rhapsody" is mainly the story of Freddie Mercury (Rami Malek), the formation of Queen, and Freddie's struggle with his sexuality. The climax of the film is the Live Aid concert from Wembley. The 20 minutes they gave onstage is Queen's most legendary performance.

In this scene, Queen guitarist Brian May is talking about "We Will Rock You" (STOMP STOMP CLAP) and explaining the thinking behind the song. May's idea was that if they gave the audience a song that was all theirs, they could participate in the show even more. He presents his idea in front of the band and significant others. May had them stand on a wooden platform and there he taught them the familiar STOMP-STOMP-CLAP that sets "We Will Rock You" apart from other songs.

Unfortunately, this delightful animated comedy was something of an under-performer when it was released. Nominated for the Academy Award in the Animated Feature category, it tells the story of a boy with this special - sometimes dreaded- gift for communicating with the dead.

"Prom" was released in April of 2011. The film features an ensemble cast, not centering on any one character in particular. Nearly the entire school has a part; each teen finding his or her date for the prom. Poor Lloyd, however, can find nobody, no matter who he asks or how he asks.

The movie also has a cast of older actors, experienced in action films from previous decades. Included in this group are Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Most critics gave this movie a positive review and it has been a box office success.

In "Avengers: Endgame", the Scott in this case is Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd). After Thanos did his job and snapped half of the living creatures in the universe away, then destroyed the Infinity Stones, the Avengers were left trying to figure out how to reverse the snap. It's suggested they time travel back to get the stones before Thanos can get hold of all of them.

In this scene, Scott volunteers to test the time travel since he's the only one familiar with going subatomic. Apparently, there were malfunctions in the equipment or design. Scott comes back to the present as a baby. He goes away and comes back as an old man. Then he comes back as his current self.

In this story, the major guardians of the world's major holidays recruits Jack Frost in an effort to save the world. Surprisingly, this was not nominated for the Animated Feature Oscar.

"The Hobbit" is another novel by Tolkien that has been adapted as a movie. It seems that "The Hobbit" is a prequel to "The Lord of the Rings". The first of the trilogy, "The Unexpected Journey", shows Bilbo - the hobbit - starting the journey with a company of wizard and dwarves to the Lonely Mountain.

Answer: Zookeeper

"Zookeeper" was released in July of 2011. It starred Kevin James as Griffon Keyes, a man who liked to talk to the animals at the zoo about his love life. He never knew they could talk until they decided to break the "animal code" and speak to the human to give him dating advice.

Originally the title of this movie was "A Couple of Dicks" but it had to be changed due to controversy. This was the first movie that Smith directed which he did not write, which might explain the largely negative reviews received.
