Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 2010 - Guess the movie this quote comes from. Cobb: "What is the most resilient parasite? Bacteria? A virus? An intestinal worm? An idea. Resilient...highly contagious."

Answer: Inception

"Inception" is a visual masterpiece by director Christopher Nolan ("Dark Knight" series). Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a thief who steals secrets through people's dreams. He is considered the best at what he does, but that comes at a price - uncertainty as to what is real or not. Through dream-sharing technology, he and his team are able to do their work together. Cobb has been experimenting with implanting an idea in another person's mind. The problem is that the idea has to originate deep within them, or the brain will recognize that it's artificially created. To do this, the team has to go three layers deep. Since time doesn't pass the same in our dreams, one hour could feel like six and vice versa. The deeper you go within a person, the slower time goes. What would feel like a lifetime could only be two hours. Can Cobb get in, implant the idea, and get out before time expires and he's stuck in the dream world forever? You'll have to watch to find out...and maybe even have to watch again.

This quote is the opening narration and really sets the tone for the rest of the film.

The incorrect answers are movies that were also released in 2010.
2. 2011 - Guess the movie this quote comes from. Jacob: "Let's talk about how many women you've been with." Cal: "Sexually?" Jacob: (sarcastically) "Yeah, no. I mean break-dance fighting."

Answer: Crazy, Stupid, Love

In this twisted, tangled mess of a movie, Cal's (Steve Carell) wife, Emily (Julianne Moore) reveals that she has had an affair with David Lindhagen (Kevin Bacon) - a fact that Cal tells anyone who will listen. Cal has a chance meeting with Jacob (Ryan Gosling), who takes Cal under his wing to teach him how to succeed in the singles market. Jacob takes Cal shopping for new clothes, teaches him all the pick-up tricks, and generally helps Cal get his mojo back. In the meantime, Hannah (Emma Stone) meets Jacob and the two fall for each other. The problem with this is that Hannah is Cal's daughter and, knowing Jacob's pick-up tricks, Cal forbids her to see Jacob again. In this scene, Jacob is trying to get to the heart of why Cal is so reluctant to move on from Emily.

Oh yeah, there's also another story within the film where Cal's son falls in love with the family's babysitter. His middle-school attempts to win her affections - she's a high school student, after all - are cringe-worthy. So how does it end? Watch and find out!

The incorrect answers are movies that were also released in 2011.
3. 2012 - Guess the movie this quote comes from. Tony: "Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist."

Answer: The Avengers

Of course this quote is from "The Avengers". In one of the first scenes that has all of the superheroes together, Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) is squaring off with Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.) - and not for the last time, either. As would be expected when so many talented people are put in one place, there is a kind of power struggle between Rogers and Stark that would last (off and on) until the end of the series. Rogers, provoking Stark, asks him "Big man in a suit of armor. Take that off, what are you?" Stark's answer is this quote.

All the incorrect answers are movies that were also released in 2012.
4. 2013 - Guess the movie this quote comes from. James: "I have a theory why women like racing drivers... It's not because they respect what we do, driving round and round in circles. Mostly they think that's pathetic and they're probably right. It's our closeness to death. You see the closer you are to death the more alive you feel, the more alive you are. They can see that in you they feel that in you. My name is James Hunt. My father is a stockbroker, my sister is a barrister, and my brother is an accountant, and I... well I do this. It's a wonderful way to live, it's the only way to drive, as if each day is your last."

Answer: Rush

The true story of the rivalry between Formula 1 drivers James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl), "Rush" is an account of both men's careers for the time of their rivalry and the stark contrasts in not only their styles, but personalities as well. Lauda, the more calculating, precision driver, is also the one who survives a horrific crash that left much of his face burned and disfigured. The irony is that because of his rivalry with Hunt, he abandoned his calculating style after Hunt got out of the pits before him. Hunt is the stereotypical driver with the good looks, devil-may-care attitude, and immense talent behind the wheel. Lauda even says at one point in the film that Hunt was the only driver he ever envied.

This quote comes from a voice over near the beginning of the film, while we're still learning things about the characters. While the voice over plays, Hunt is making out with the nurse (Natalie Dormer) he just met in the emergency room.

All the incorrect answers are movies that were also released in 2013.
5. 2014 - Guess the movie this quote comes from. Jane: "What about you? What are you?" Stephen: "Cosmologist, I'm a cosmologist." Jane: "What is that?" Stephen: "It is a kind of religion for intelligent atheists."

Answer: The Theory of Everything

Based on a true story, "The Theory of Everything" is a chronicle of both the professional and personal lives of Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) and his wife Jane (Felicity Jones). We see their courtship, marriage, and the onset of his disease (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or ALS). We also Hawking defend his master's thesis and ultimately, his doctorate. The interesting thing about his doctoral thesis is that it refutes his master's thesis. He was basically correcting himself. Even though Hawking's body failed him, his mind was still unbelievably sharp.

In this scene, Jane and Stephen, both university students, are just meeting each other and are talking about their majors and their interests.

Eddie Redmayne won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Hawking. Felicity Jones was nominated for Best Actress but did not win.

All the incorrect answers are movies that were also released in 2014.
6. 2015 - Guess the movie this quote comes from. Mark: [after finding out the intercept distance is too far] "Did you say 312? Yeah, I'll just wave to you guys as I go by."

Answer: The Martian

"The Martian" is the story of how Mark Watney (Matt Damon) came to be stranded alone on Mars. When his crew gets caught in a massive sandstorm on Mars and they are trying to make their way back to the ship, Watney gets hit with flying debris. Assuming that he wouldn't be able to survive the blow, they make their escape, leaving Watney behind. For much of the film, Watney's interactions were with himself and a video camera. As is the case with many other survival/castaway films, Watney first struggles with the basic needs of life. Once he accomplishes that, he sets out to figure out how to reestablish contact with Earth. On hearing of his survival, even though they were more than halfway back to Earth, Watney's crew voted to return to rescue him. They finally arrived at a solution to get him from the surface of Mars back to the ship that would be waiting in orbit.

In this scene, the crew realizes that they are traveling much too fast and are going to be too far away to intercept him. Mark says this to the ship in orbit.

All the incorrect answers are movies that were also released in 2015.
7. 2016 - Name the movie this quote comes from. Mia: "It's pretty strange that we keep running into each other." Sebastian: "Maybe it means something." Mia: "I doubt it." Sebastian: "Yeah, I didn't think so."

Answer: La La Land

"La La Land" is a musical film set in Los Angeles (or La La Land, as some people refer to it). It follows the stories of Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), two people who meet, fall in love, then go their separate ways. Mia is an aspiring actress and playwright who is on the never-ending treadmill of Hollywood auditions and callbacks. Sebastian is a jazz pianist trying to preserve the art form before it gets lost forever. He is also upset that his favorite jazz club has been turned into a Samba-Tapas restaurant. The film takes a few twists and turns and even has kind of an alternate universe segment. If you want the stereotypical Hollywood ending, don't look for it here.

This scene is when they keep bumping into each other around Los Angeles and they actually start talking with each other.

All the incorrect answers were movies that were also released in 2016.
8. 2017 - Name the movie this quote comes from. Diana: "What is a secretary?" Etta: "Oh, well, I do everything. I go where he tells me to go, I do what he tells me to do." Diana: "Well, where I'm from that's called slavery." Etta: "I really like her."

Answer: Wonder Woman

"Wonder Woman" is partially the origin story of Diana Prince/Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and the story of how she left her island to accompany Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) back to Europe. Diana is convinced that the war is the work of Ares, the God of War, and not of mortal men. Even though she ends up fighting in WWI, it's only because she's looking for Ares. She believes that if she stops Ares, she'll stop the war.

In this scene, Diana is just meeting Trevor's secretary Etta (Lucy Davis). Diana's view of the world proves that she is naïve. But I find it interesting that looking at things from a different perspective really changes the way you view the world.

All the incorrect answers were movies that were also released in 2017.
9. 2018 - Name the movie this quote comes from. Brian: "I wanna give the audience a song that they can perform."

Answer: Bohemian Rhapsody

"Bohemian Rhapsody" is mainly the story of Freddie Mercury (Rami Malek), the formation of Queen, and Freddie's struggle with his sexuality. The climax of the film is the Live Aid concert from Wembley. The 20 minutes they gave onstage is Queen's most legendary performance.

In this scene, Queen guitarist Brian May is talking about "We Will Rock You" (STOMP STOMP CLAP) and explaining the thinking behind the song. May's idea was that if they gave the audience a song that was all theirs, they could participate in the show even more. He presents his idea in front of the band and significant others. May had them stand on a wooden platform and there he taught them the familiar STOMP-STOMP-CLAP that sets "We Will Rock You" apart from other songs.

The incorrect answers were movies that were also released in 2018.
10. 2019 - Name the movie this quote comes from. Scott: "Someone peed my pants! Not sure if it was the baby-me or the old-me. [pause] Or was it just me-me?"

Answer: Avengers: Endgame

In "Avengers: Endgame", the Scott in this case is Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd). After Thanos did his job and snapped half of the living creatures in the universe away, then destroyed the Infinity Stones, the Avengers were left trying to figure out how to reverse the snap. It's suggested they time travel back to get the stones before Thanos can get hold of all of them.

In this scene, Scott volunteers to test the time travel since he's the only one familiar with going subatomic. Apparently, there were malfunctions in the equipment or design. Scott comes back to the present as a baby. He goes away and comes back as an old man. Then he comes back as his current self.

The incorrect answers were movies that were also released in 2019.
