Thinking his mother safely ensconced at the hairdressers for an hour, Luc has gone to meet his grandmother at their regular rendezvous in the shop. However, Caroline has promised Le Comte to distribute leaflets throughout the town protesting the rising immorality he perceives in the town. Their text reads, "Boycott immorality. Our beloved village rests upon a solid foundation of Family, Church and Community. To keep Lansquenet safe and tranquil, we must close our doors to outsiders whose only tradition is self-gratification, whose only creed is godlessness, and whose only possible effect is the moral contamination of our village. We must give these outsiders no quarter! We must make them unwelcome in our homes, on our streets, and in our places of business. Thank you for your cooperation, Lansquenet Town Council", but they are part of his personal vendetta. Caroline is going past the shop (she clearly didn't expect Vianne to post a leaflet protesting against her own presence) when she spies her son and mother together, and comes rushing in. This is when we find out that Armande suffers from diabetes, making her consumption of chocolate not only self-indulgent, but also reckless. Caroline's wish for her go to an institution where she will receive proper medical care, frustrated by her insistence on remaining independent, is a significant part of the estrangement between the two.

After enjoying their chocolaty meal at Armande's house, the party moved to Roux's boat where there was dancing and dessert. Caroline had discovered Luc had run away, and saw Luc dancing with Armande on the boat. She caught Armande's eye, and they looked at each other before Caroline disappeared up the hill. We later discovered her fixing the old bike, getting it ready for Luc to ride--something she had never done before. She was willing to give him more leeway as long as he promised never to run away again.

Vianne never had her father's ashes, it was her mother's. Vianne was trying to get Anouk to put on her cloak, but Anouk wanted to stay where she was, she did not want to leave the village. Vianne half dragged her to the top of the stairs where Anouk bumped into the suitcase in the struggle and it opened, causing the urn holding Vianne's mother's ashes to fall out and smash on the stairs.

Roux leaves the town with the other water gypsies, and after he goes, everything changes for Vianne. She decides to leave with the north wind, as her people have been doing for centuries, but stays when her mother's ashes smash on the stairs. She is much happier knowing that she doesn't have to move around again, but still misses Roux. One day, she comes down to the shop to find him inspecting the door. "Still squeaks, does it?"

Caroline's response to seeing the joy on Luc's face as he dances with his grandmother on the boats is the realisation that Luc needs to be allowed to act like a boy, and to grow up ready to face the world; her repair of the bike is symbolic of this dramatic change in her understanding of responsible parenting.

The incorrect options are all the actions of others. After Armande's funeral, when the priest blames those who led her into temptation, Vianne is ready to give up, and packs her bags. Anouk, however, refuses to go; in the struggle, the urn containing Chitza's ashes is broken. When they reach the shop at the foot of the stairs, they see Josephine and their other friends beavering away on preparing chocolate for the festival. This makes Vianne realise that not everyone in town is against her, and she decides to stay for the festival.

On Easter Eve, Le Comte breaks into the shop and attacks a chocolate statue of a naked woman in the display window. When a piece of the chocolate accidentally falls into his mouth, his frenzied destruction turns into frenzied consumption. The next morning Pere Henri discovers him passed out in the window, face covered in chocolate. His disgrace is not made public, but the Easter sermon is on the topic of Christ as being inherently accepting, not denying, in nature.

The Count looked through his window and saw Caroline entering the Chocolaterie. He broke down, asking Christ what he should do. He went into Vianne's shop, cutting and slashing away at all the chocolate in her display until some landed on his lower lip. He licked it, and then couldn't stop - he grabbed everything edible in sight, stuffing it all into his mouth until he flopped down covered in chocolate, and slept. Pere Henri discovered him lying there the next morning.
At the beginning of the movie, the Count does not seem like a very nice person at all, he hates anything out of the ordinary. However, when Vianne found him in her display the next morning, he seemed to have had a change of heart about her and her chocolate.
