Midway through the film, English and Drama teacher, Miss Mason, asked Stephanie to stay back in order to discuss her "Hamlet" essay. Correctly inferring that Stephanie had written a poor essay, Michael seized his opportunity to spend time with her, by hanging back after class and offering to help her rewrite it. Stephanie agreed to consider Michael's offer, and did eventually agree, which saw the pair meet up and learn a little more about one and other, though Stephanie continued to make it clear that she did not intend to go out on a date with Michael.

Rizzo and Kenickie had gotten together the night of the sleepover at Frenchy's house. Later, at the Frosty Palace, Rizzo complained that she had so many hickeys, she looked like a leper. In the movie Grease, the character Danny Zuko famously sings the song "Summer Nights" in which he recounts his summer romance with Sandy. One of the lines in the song is "We made out under the dock" which is completed by Sandy with the response "under the docks". This scene is a memorable moment in the movie and has become a popular reference in pop culture. Interestingly, the movie was based on a musical of the same name that premiered on Broadway in 1972.

Later, Danny told Sandy that he and Cha-Cha "didn't go together, we just went together, that's all." Danny and Cha-Cha won the contest, dancing to the song "Hand Jive". They then had to dance a spotlight dance, to "Blue Moon". Cha-Cha had originally come to the dance as Kenickie's date. Even though Sandy was upset that Danny won the contest with someone else, she forgave him.

Coincidental this song, which mentions Elvis Presley in the lyric, was filmed on the same day that Elvis died.
Stockard Channing was 34 years at the time of filming the part of a teenage Rydell High School student. The movie makers had considered giving the role of Betty Rizzo to Carrie Fisher.
