Disney gave the starring mermaid in this 1989 movie a name--Ariel. In the original 1836 Hans Christian Andersen fable the mermaid has no name at all. Ariel is Hebrew meaning "lion of God". It is also used in the Old Testament as a symbol for the holy city of Jerusalem. Ariel is a very interesting choice given the religious tones of the original tale; and it is a great stride for a girl to have a name. Jodi Benson played Princess Ariel, the daughter of King Triton.

Ursula told Ariel that she would transform her into a human for three days to give her that much time to win Eric's love by virtue of them sharing a passionate kiss. In the process, Ariel would lose her voice. Ariel also agreed that, if she failed to win Erica's love, she would be Ursula's captive forever. Ariel failed and therefore was bound by Ursula's orders until Triton stepped in and offered to take Ariel's place, which Ursula accepted. Benson also voiced characters in the films, "Toy Story 2", "Toy Story 3" and "Thumbelina".
