Jax is seen in two scenes at the start of the movie, both times helping Sonya hunt down Kano. It is interesting to note that he is the higher rank, yet she seems to be in charge.
Kitana has one fight scene but uses none of the special moves her video game counterpart possesses. Shao Kahn just shows up at the end so they could leave things open.

Heidioshi is a giant ninja from the cartoon. Cyrax fights with Sonya and Jax and Smoke tries to kill Lui Kang. There just wasn't enough time to throw Sektor into the mix.

Tagawa, born on September 27th, 1950 in Tokyo, Japan, was cast as Shang Tsung. Shang Tsung was in the opening scene when he fought with Chan Kang, Liu's brother. He got the better of Chan since he killed him and sucked his soul into his body. Early on in the film, Shang Tsung met with Kano since he wanted to make sure Kano would get Sonya Blade on the boat which would take the Mortal Kombat participants to the location where the tournament was held. After Liu Kang defeated his first opponent in the tournament, Shang Tsung sucked that opponent's soul into his body. Shang Tsung mentioned that he exercised his right to challenge whomever he wanted to if he fought in the tournament. He selected Sonya Blade since he knew she could not defeat him but he ended up fighting Liu Kang. The result of that battle was Liu shoving Shang Tsung off a ledge to his death due to his falling onto metal spikes. Tagawa guest starred on the TV series "Beyond the Break", "Heroes" and "Walker, Texas Ranger".

Raiden's advice is for Liu Kang, Johnny Cage and Sonya to get over their personal problems and unite to win the tournament. The first to learn is Johnny Cage with his ego. Liu Kang learns later when he defeats Shang Tsung. Sonya doesn't learn until she is kidnapped by Shang Tsung. After Johnny Cage tells Raiden that this is their tournament, he walks away and Raiden says, "At last, one of them has learned."

In Outworld, Liu is attacked by a human form Reptile. After the fight, Reptile changes into a statue. From the inside of the statue snakes and bugs start to pour out. Liu steps on them in fury and rage.

He's just about to get torched by one of Scorp's breaths of fire when he quickly grabs a shield to protect himself, then pierces the poor chap with a well-aimed spear. A vicious swing of the shield finishes him off.

She swings her legs up while Kano is taunting her in the middle of their battle. Once she grabs him, she breaks his neck. The rest of Sonya's moves aren't used in the movie.

Sub-Zero is a master of cold and is the blue ninja as referred to by unfamiliar Mortal Kombat watchers. Scorpion is a master of fire and is the yellow ninja of the Netherealm. There are many other ninjas like Rain, Noob Saibot, Ermac and Reptile.

Goro is talking to Kano before the Tournament. Kano says he believes in a fair fight without any unnatural powers. He wonders why Shang Tsung is so great. Goro explains it to him.

Trevor Goddard (Kano) died of a drug overdose in 2003. Also, after Trevor Goddard's portrayl of Kano in the film, his video game counterpart took on an Australian identity.

He grabs a bucket of water conveniently near, then pitches it at the helpless Sub-Zero. The water shapes itself into a spear-like configuration, goes straight through Sub-Zero, and turns him to ice.

Ho was cast in the small role of Chan Kang, Liu's brother. Chan was killed in the opening scene right after Shang Tsung broke his back. When Liu Kang battled Shang Tsung in the film's final match up, Shang morphed into Chan in an attempt to derail Liu. Shang Tsung, impersonating Chan, said Liu was responsible for Chan's death since Liu was in America at the time Chan died and was not there to save him. Liu shouted back that everyone was responsible for their own destiny and that Shang Tsung killed Chan. After Liu Kang killed Shang Tsung, the souls of all the warriors he sucked into his body were released, including Chan. Chan's spirit told Liu that they would be reunited one day. Ho portrayed characters in the movies "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End", "The Last Samurai" and "Blade".

A Fatality is a signature special move that is done at the end of a battle to finish off the opponent. Shang Tsung uses his legendary Soul Steal. He performs it after the Unnamed Fighter loses to Liu Kang. After doing this, he smiles and quietly says, "Fatality."

Reptile is the camouflage, shape-shifting two-legged lizard of Shang Tsung. He is entrusted to watch over Kitana to make sure she does not do anything foolish. Noob Saibot is a ninja shown only in the video game, and Goro does not need a guardian.

Kitana tells this to Liu Kang during their fight. They don't fight for real, they are only pretending in front of Shang Tsung. Kitana gives Liu advice for his next fight with Sub-Zero.

During Robin Shou's (Liu Kang) match with Talisa Soto (Kitana) he never once strikes her with a punch or kick. He instead blocks and counters her moves, preferring to throw or grapple instead of attacking her. It is the same case in his fight with Jade in the sequel, "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation".
