Ellie and Carl met in an abandoned house where Ellie was using her imagination that the house was a ship and she was going on an adventure. Carl was partaking in his own bout of imagination play when he heard her in the house. They later married, moved into the house where they first met, and lived there together until Ellie died.

Ellie, the Muntz fan, naturally wanted to go to the land of her hero. She created a scrapbook for her adventures which she shared with Carl. Carl promised to take Ellie to Paradise Falls someday.
