Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Here we can see the flag of the Duchy of Brabant: a gold lion on a field of black. The duchy was the progenitor of the country of Belgium, which adopted the colors of this flag in its own present-day flag. Which color is NOT found in Belgium's flag?

Answer: white

The Belgian flag is tricolor with black, gold, and red. The colors were taken from the Duchy of Brabant. The land that constituted the duchy is mostly in present-day Belgium with North Brabant being in the Netherlands.
2. Pictured here in green is Middle Francia, which was split into smaller realms in 855. Coming from this split, what incoherent kingdom was later divided into Upper and Lower Lorraine which were even further fragmented in 1183, leading to the creation of the Duchy of Brabant?

Answer: Lotharingia

Lotharingia was named for King Lothair II whose father ruled Middle Francia, one of the three successor kingdoms after the Carolingian Empire collapsed. Lotharingia was composed of the Low Countries as well as parts of present-day Switzerland, France and Germany.
3. The Duchy of Brabant was often associated with the Netherlands, together composing what geographical region known as "de Lage Landen" in Dutch and "les Pays-Bas" in French?

Answer: Low Countries

The region of the Low Countries currently is associated with the countries of Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. The geographic area has long been associated with newly-built mercantilist cities as opposed to ancient cultural and spiritual centers. These areas thrived in trade and manufacturing. Germanic languages were mostly spoken here, though French was also influential.
4. The year was 1183, and the Holy Roman Empire had had dominion over Lower Lorraine for over 200 years. The title of Duke of Brabant was created and taken on by Henry I of Brabant. Which Holy Roman Emperor, with a nickname that means "red beard", created this title?

Answer: Frederick Barbarossa

The emperor, Frederick Barbarossa, had relatively humble beginnings as the Duke of Swabia, later becoming the German king. He fought many wars in northern Italy, where the Italians nicknamed him "red beard". The nickname stuck in Italian. He favored Henry I of Brabant to rule over this newly-created duchy.
5. In 1406, Antoine de Bourgogne became duke of Brabant after his aunt died without an heir. In 1415, the duke was obliged to help the French fight Henry V of England. The duke dressed in improvised armor in his hurry to get to the battlefield, and he was captured and put to death by some English archers. In what battle was this duke of Brabant killed?

Answer: Battle of Agincourt

Antoine de Bourgogne was seen as a valiant soldier, but the Battle of Agincourt was one of the most famous English victories, and Antoine got himself caught up in the mix. His armor was ramshackle and improvised. He even wore a surcoat made from a trumpeter's flag. Since he was wearing such unusual armor, the English army wasn't aware of his value and killed him along with some other prisoners they had captured.
6. Patron of the Flemish artist Jan van Eyck, Philip the Good brought his duchy to its height of prosperity. During this time, the Duchy of Brabant along with several other close realms came under his rule in 1430. What duchy, which shares its name with a shade of red, came to rule over the Duchy of Brabant?

Answer: Duchy of Burgundy

Philip the Good came to rule over Burgundy as well as the Burgundian Netherlands through inheritance and conquest. The Burgundians were allied with the English against France for much of Philip's early rule. During this time, he captured Joan of Arc and handed her over to the English. Later, he broke his alliance with England and sided with France.

He was a master at playing the two off each other and was quite successful politically.
7. The Duchy of Brabant was famous for its walled cities, which were its most important centers of trade. They were quite adept at building them up. Which of the following was NOT one of Brabant's famous walled cities?

Answer: Amsterdam

Leuven was the original walled capital city from the early boundaries of the Duchy of Brabant. Brussels later became a capital city, and it was known as the "city of nobles" because of its royal court. Antwerp was the capital of the Flanders region and was extremely important in terms of its economic influence.
8. Through marriage alliances, the Habsburg dynasty under Charles V held domain throughout much of Europe in the sixteenth century. The Duchy of Brabant was included in this as it was part of the Habsburg Netherlands. What numerical name was given to the Imperial fiefs within the Habsburg Netherlands?

Answer: Seventeen Provinces

The Seventeen Provinces were ruled by Charles V, and he moved to organize the provinces into one unified hereditary entity. This allowed his heir to inherit all the provinces at once as a centralized unit. This centralization angered the provinces, some of which later revolted and formed the Dutch Republic.
9. The son of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V inherited the Habsburg Netherlands, including the Duchy of Brabant along with the Spanish crown. Which Spanish Habsburg king was it?

Answer: Philip II of Spain

Philip II (1527-98), son of the historically famous Charles V, was king of Spain and ruled over parts of Italy and Portugal as well. He controlled the Spanish Netherlands which included the Duchy of Brabant, though North Brabant was later ceded to the Dutch Republic as a result of the Peace of Westphalia.
10. This image shows the Battle of Jemappes (1792), in which the French attacked the Habsburgs. The Duchy of Brabant was very often controlled by foreign powers through much of its history. Which Habsburg-dominated nation was the last to hold domain over the Duchy of Brabant before the French took it from them and dissolved it in 1795?

Answer: Austria

After the War of Spanish Succession, Spain ceded what was left of the Spanish Netherlands to Austria. The Austrians ruled the lands, but not without difficulty as they were not contiguous. After the French occupied the lands during the French Revolution, the Duchy of Brabant was dissolved and the lands were eventually turned over to the United Kingdom of the Netherlands.

However, in 1830, the Belgian Revolution took place, and the lands of Brabant were separated from the Netherlands, forming the independent Kingdom of Belgium.
